Brother Nickname Generator
Nicknames and contact names for your brother
Find what to call your brother, out loud or in your phone: classics like Bubba and Bud, older-brother names like The Prototype, little-brother names like The Sequel, contact labels such as Still Owes Me Twenty, and labeled words for brother from Bhaiya to Kuya.
About this generator
A brother often goes by something other than his given name at home. Most families settle on something short that started in the nursery (Bubba, Bud, Bubs) and never left, and a phone contact adds a second chance: the label only you see when he calls. This list of 1,000 covers both, and every entry works without knowing his name.
Birth order does most of the joking. An older brother gets names about going first, such as The Prototype, First Edition and Third Parent, while a younger one gets The Sequel, Tag-Along and Gets Away With Everything. There are also contact labels built on habits (Human Alarm Clock, Charger Thief, Free Tech Support), cool one-word names like Ace and Maverick, sweet ones like My First Friend, and labels for twins, stepbrothers, half brothers and brothers-in-law.
Many languages have separate words for an older and a younger brother, and some change the word with the speaker. Hindi has Bhaiya for an older brother, Filipino has Kuya, Mandarin has Gege and Didi, and in Korean a younger man says Hyung while a younger woman says Oppa. Those entries carry a label in parentheses saying which brother the word is for. Words from other alphabets appear in common romanized spellings.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick a contact name for the screen it shows up on. Your phone displays it on the lock screen and in the car, so Still Owes Me Twenty is funnier in private than when your boss sees the call come in.
- Match the word to the language and the birth order before you borrow it. Kuya, Bhaiya and Gege are for an older brother only, while Chhota Bhai (Hindi) and Didi (Mandarin) are for a younger one. In Hindi, Didi means an older sister.
- Tease about what he does, not what he is. Fridge Raider and Charger Thief are jokes he can laugh at and deny, while a name about looks or grades stops being fun the second time.
- With several brothers, give each a different pattern so the contacts list reads at a glance: one by birth order (The Prototype), one by habit (Road Trip DJ), one sweet (My First Friend).
- Say it out loud before it sticks. A nickname you use every day should be one or two syllables, like Bubs, Ace or Chief, and the long jokes belong in the contacts app.
Frequently asked questions
What are some cool names for a brother?
Short, confident names work best out loud: Ace, Chief, Captain, Legend, Maverick, Hotshot and Wingman are all in the list. For something with more attitude, try Lone Wolf, Renegade or Kingpin. One or two syllables is easiest to shout across a house.
What is a funny contact name for an older brother?
Jokes about going first land best: The Prototype, First Edition, Third Parent, Deputy Dad and Big Brother (Thinks He's Dad). If he still bosses everyone around, Older and Bossier or Seniority Rules says it for you.
What is a funny contact name for a little brother?
Play on him arriving second or getting off lightly: The Sequel, Mini Me, Tag-Along, Never Got Grounded and Little Brother (Not So Little). Tattletale in Chief and Mom's Spy suit the one who always told on you.
How do you say brother in other languages?
The list has labeled words from dozens of languages, among them Hermano (Spanish), Frère (French), Bruder (German), Fratello (Italian), Bhai (Hindi and Urdu) and Akhi (Arabic, my brother). Many languages split the word by age: Kuya in Filipino, Onii-san in Japanese and Anh Trai in Vietnamese all mean an older brother. Each of these entries says in parentheses which brother it is for, and a few say who uses it, such as Hyung, which a younger man says in Korean.
