Breaking grew up in the Bronx in the 1970s, danced to the drum breaks that DJs such as Kool Herc stretched out at parties, and its dancers have always called themselves b-boys and b-girls. "Breakdancer" is the word the wider world uses, but the naming custom belongs to the scene: you take a short nickname, often one a crew gives you, and it goes on the battle bracket in place of your legal name. - Keep it to one or two beats. An MC has to shout it over music at a battle, so Skid, Cog and Rubber Rock carry better than a long phrase.
- Use the prefix when you need it and drop it when you do not. B-Girl Riptide on a bracket becomes plain Riptide in the cypher, so test the word alone.
- Ask around before you settle. The scene is small and names travel, so search battle results and social platforms to see whether a dancer near you already goes by it.
- Let your crew have a say. In breaking a name that other dancers give you tends to stick, so bring a shortlist to practice and see which one people use.

What is a good b-boy or b-girl name?
A good one is short, easy to shout and says something about your style. B-Boy Gearbox, B-Girl Jetstream, Kid Tumbleweed and Ricochet all do that in one or two words. Names that describe a signature move, such as Backspin Doctor or Coin Drop, work when that move really is yours.
Should I say breakdancer, b-boy or breaker?
Inside the scene the dance is called breaking and the dancers are b-boys, b-girls or breakers. Breakdancing is the common outside term, and it is the word most people type when they search. Either way the name follows the same custom, so the solo names on this list work with or without the B-Boy or B-Girl prefix.
Do these names work for a breaking crew?
