Dancer stage names follow the conventions of the style you dance, and a name that sounds right in one scene sounds wrong in another. Classical ballet has a long habit of Russified and Frenchified names: for most of the 20th century English dancers took names like Markova and Dolin because audiences expected ballet to sound Russian, and company rosters still lean toward Natalia, Odette and Vesperova over plain names. Street styles go the opposite way. Breakers carry a crew-given alias with a B-Boy or B-Girl prefix (B-Boy Flux, B-Girl Spark), poppers and lockers use a nickname that describes their move or attitude, and house and krump dancers often keep a single word.

Ballroom and Latin competitors usually use their real names but choose the glamorous form of them, so Valentina beats Val and Santiago beats Santi. Burlesque, cabaret and showgirl names run on alliteration and glitter: a first name plus a jewel, fabric or stage word, as in Pearl Pirouette or Lola Limelight. Belly dancers often adopt an Arabic or Turkish stage name, and flamenco artists take a nickname with La or El plus a place or quality.

Whatever the style, a good dancer name is short enough for an MC to shout, easy to spell on a flyer, and distinct from the well-known names in your scene.
