Generate original names in the style of 007 antagonists for spy stories, tabletop games and parody scripts: masterminds like Baron Emil Kastraal and Dr. Julius Naught, henchmen like Tick-Tock and Steelcap, and code titles like The Actuary.

About Bond villain names

Ian Fleming gave his villains names that do half the characterization. Auric Goldfinger's first name comes from the Latin for gold, Dr. Julius No sounds like a refusal, and Oddjob tells you a henchman's place in the story before he throws his hat. The recipe is a cosmopolitan first name, a surname that hints at menace or obsession, and often a title that suggests money, rank or a medical degree of doubtful origin.

This list follows that recipe with invented names. Masterminds pair European first names with coined surnames: Maximilian Krone, Casimir Argento, Magnus Styx. Titled villains add a rank, as in Baron Emil Kastraal, Dr. Julius Naught or Countess Livia Nerezza. Henchmen get one blunt word such as Tick-Tock, Thumbscrew or Steelcap, or a courtesy title, alone or paired like Mr. Quill and Mr. Blott. There are villainesses, tycoons, nicknamed enforcers such as Emil 'The Needle' Varnok, and code titles like The Actuary and The Gentleman from Zurich.

The names are written in the style, not taken from the novels or films, though a chance match with a minor character is possible in a series this long. The surnames draw on German, Italian, Slavic, Dutch and French sounds because the genre does, but nationality is only flavor: a motive and a lair matter more than an accent.

How to choose Bond villain names

  • Start with the obsession. Goldfinger loves gold, so a villain called Midas Kallergis or Pieter van der Geld (geld is Dutch for money) should love wealth just as openly. Let the surname point at the scheme.
  • Give the mastermind a long, formal name and the henchman a short one. Sir Alaric Pennington-Vane gives the orders and Doorstop carries them out.
  • Use titles sparingly. Doctor, Baron, Countess and Admiral each imply a history, so decide where the title came from and whether it would survive a background check.
  • Pairs are memorable. Two polite killers who finish each other's sentences, like Mr. Tick and Mr. Tock, give a story a running act that a lone heavy cannot.
  • For parody, lean into the pun. For a straight thriller, keep it to a hint. Dr. Never is a joke, while Konrad Nox is a threat.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like a Bond villain?

Three things: an international first name, a surname with a dark or greedy meaning, and an air of wealth or rank. Fleming's Auric Goldfinger and Dr. Julius No set the pattern. In this list, Casimir Argento (argento is Italian for silver), Magnus Styx and Baron Emil Kastraal are built the same way.

Does the list include real Bond villains?

No, it is written as original names in the style, so it is not a list of Blofeld, Scaramanga and Jaws. Names such as Dr. Julius Naught and Dr. Nein are deliberate nods to Dr. No, not copies. With dozens of films and novels behind the series, an accidental match with a minor character is possible, so look a name up if that matters for your project.

What are good henchman names?

Henchmen are usually named for an object, a habit or a sound: Tick-Tock, Thumbscrew, Steelcap, Hatpin, Boxcars. A polite courtesy title works too, as with Mr. Small, Miss Pennyfeather or the duo Mr. Quill and Mr. Blott. Nicknamed enforcers such as Emil 'The Needle' Varnok sit between the two.

Can I use these names in a published story or game?

The names are invented, but nobody has researched whether another author or company already uses them. Write your own villain instead of copying an existing character with a new label, and search the name before you sell anything under it.
