Generate blue jay names for the regulars at your feeder, a jay in a rehabilitator's care, or a blue jay character, mascot or plush: Captain Crest, Acorn Jack, Indigo Jack, Blue Bandit, Jaywalker and Sir Jay.

About blue jay names

The blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is hard to ignore, and that makes it easy to name. It is a corvid, a cousin of crows and ravens, with a crest it raises when it is excited or annoyed and flattens when it is calm. It announces hawks and cats to the whole neighborhood, can imitate a hawk's call, and carries acorns off several at a time to bury for winter, a habit that helps oak woods spread.

The 1,000 names here follow those traits. A slice of 60 covers blue shades and gems (Cobalt, Lapis, Denim). The rest are crest and plumage names (Topknot, Wingbar), loud and bossy names (Racket, Town Crier), acorn and peanut names (Acorn Jack, Stasher), sky and storm names, mimic and trickster names, and feeder-bully names meant in fun (Seed Hog, Line Cutter). The word Jay gets its own wordplay (Jaywalker, Sir Jay), and there are pairs, family groups, mascots and storybook characters. Species and Latin names carry a short gloss in parentheses, and the few names from fiction, jays and characters named Jay, are labeled with their source.

Blue jays are wild birds, so these are names for the regulars you watch, for a bird in a licensed rehabilitator's care, or for a character, mascot or plush.

How to choose blue jay names

  • Watch the bird for a week before you choose. The one that clears the feeder is a Tray Tyrant or The Bouncer, the one that sounds the alarm is a Lookout or Hawk Alert, and the one that leaves with three peanuts is a Stasher.
  • Individual jays are hard to tell apart, so name by something you can see or time: a molting bird with a bare head in late summer is Baldy, and the first visitor of the morning is Early Riser or First In.
  • For a pair or a family group, use a pair name (Acorn and Oak, Racket and Ruckus) or a group name such as The Peanut Band or The Backyard Scold. A party, a band and a scold are all traditional words for a group of jays.
  • For a mascot or a story character, a title or alliteration makes the name stick: Captain Bluejay, Jasper Jay, Horatio Squawk. Say it out loud the way a crowd or a narrator would.
  • If you find an injured or orphaned jay, the name can wait. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, who is the right person to care for it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a blue jay?

A good blue jay name picks up something the bird really does. Crest, Topknot and Captain Crest fit the look, Racket, Herald and Sergeant fit the voice, and Acorn, Peanut and Nutkin fit the habit of carrying food away to hide.

Is a blue jay really blue?

Not by pigment. The pigment in the feathers is brown melanin, and the blue you see comes from the way the feather's structure scatters light. The shade names in the list run from Denim and Dusty Blue to Cobalt and Electric Blue, so you can match the bird as it looks in your own yard.

What do the words in parentheses mean?

They are short glosses. Latin and species names such as Cristata (Latin: crested) and Steller (Steller's jay) say what the word means or which jay it comes from, and names from fiction such as Mordecai (Regular Show) name their source. Leave the parentheses out when you use the name.

Can I use these names for a team mascot?

Yes. Names like Rally Jay, Victory Jay and The Blue Knight are meant for school and club mascots and story characters. This site has no connection with any team and has not looked into whether another team already uses a name, so look around before you print one on a shirt.
