Generate bison and buffalo names for ranch herds, mascots, pets, games and stories: Plains names like Dakota and Thunderhead, heavyweight names like Boulder and Goliath, red calf names like Red Dog and Gingersnap, and puns like Bye Son and Roam Ranger.

About bison names

The animal most North Americans call a buffalo is the American bison, and both words work as names, so this list uses both. Bison names tend to follow what people notice first: where the animal lives and how big it is. The landscape group draws on the Great Plains and on parks and preserves where herds still graze (Dakota, Badlands, Lamar, Tallgrass, Wind Cave), while the weather group borrows the sky over that country: Thunderhead, Chinook, Blue Norther, Rolling Thunder.

A mature bull can weigh about a ton, which explains heavyweight names such as Boulder, Goliath, Freight Train and Two Ton, and the shag names taken from the coat: Wooly, Mop Top, Chaps, Pantaloons. Calves are the opposite. They are born a bright cinnamon orange and are nicknamed red dogs, so the calf group runs to Red Dog, Gingersnap, Pumpkin Spice and Little Thunder.

The rest of the list covers mascot standards (Bucky, Stampede, Big Blue), frontier and prairie plant names, words for bison from science and other languages, and puns built on roam, herd and graze. Tatanka, the Lakota word for a bison bull, is included with that plain meaning; nothing here is made up to sound Native.

How to choose bison names

  • Name for the adult, not the calf. A red dog called Gingersnap turns dark brown within months and grows into a very large animal, so check that the name still fits, or decide to enjoy the joke.
  • For a ranch or conservation herd, pick one theme per year or per family line, such as rivers, storms or prairie plants, so a name tells you something about the animal at a glance.
  • Mascot names get shouted by a crowd. Two syllables with a hard first consonant, such as Bucky, Stomper or Rumble, carry across a stadium better than a long pun.
  • Bison and buffalo are both fine in a name. Bison is the correct word for the American animal, while buffalo is the older everyday word and sits more easily in phrases like Buffalo Gal or Buffalo Nickel.
  • Do not invent names that imitate Native American languages. If you want a name from a specific language, use a documented word and learn what it means first.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a bison?

For a bull, heavyweight and weather names work well: Boulder, Goliath, Thunderhead, Juggernaut or Old Ironsides. For a cow, prairie names such as Prairie Rose, Dakota Rose, Bluestem and Meadowlark are popular, and a calf suits Red Dog, Gingersnap or Little Thunder.

Is it a bison or a buffalo?

The American animal is a bison, with the scientific name Bison bison. True buffalo are the water buffalo of Asia and the Cape buffalo of Africa, but buffalo has been the everyday word in North America for centuries. Both words appear in this list.

What do you call a baby bison?

A baby bison is a calf. Newborn calves are orange-red rather than brown and are nicknamed red dogs, and their coats darken after a few months. Calf names in the list include Red Dog, Cinnamon Stick, Pumpkin Spice and Carrot Top.

What are some funny bison names?

The classic is Bye Son, from the dad joke about a buffalo saying goodbye to his child. Others in the list include Roam Ranger, Sir Roams-a-Lot, Amazing Graze, Technically a Bison and Not a Cow, plus park visitor jokes such as Do Not Pet and Twenty-Five Yards.
