Elk Name Generator

Elk, or wapiti, are the second-largest deer on earth, and the names people give them tend to match: a bull with a seven-point rack screaming across a September meadow wants a name like Granite, Bugle or Thunder, not Pickle. Cows and calves are a different matter. They are lean, quiet and tawny, and soft meadow names like Clover, Willow, Fern and Sprig suit them, as do calf names that sound small and spotted, such as Dapple, Nubbin and Freckles.

The list draws on the places elk live and the things they eat. Rocky Mountain range and park names (Teton, Absaroka, Estes, Banff) read as strong, one-word elk names, and so do the plants of elk country: Aspen, Lodgepole, Fireweed, Kinnikinnick, Balsamroot. Hunter and biologist slang adds Raghorn, Spike, Brow Tine and Sixpoint. For a mascot or story elk you will also find frontier names (Bridger, Zebulon, Clementine), Highland red-deer names from Scotland (Hamish, Eilidh, Glencoe), Scandinavian names for the European cousins, and puns on the word itself: Elkanah, Elkton, Elmer, Wally Wapiti.

Pick by the animal's sex and age first, then by where it lives. A Roosevelt elk from the Olympic rainforest sounds right as Moss or Hemlock; a Tule elk from California grassland can carry Sierra or Tule itself.
