Find the right name for an elk: rugged mountain and forest names for a bugling bull, soft meadow names for a cow or calf, Rocky Mountain place names, old-timey frontier names, and a few elk puns for mascots, plush toys and story characters.
About elk names
Elk, or wapiti, are the second-largest deer on earth, and the names people give them tend to match: a bull with a seven-point rack screaming across a September meadow wants a name like Granite, Bugle or Thunder, not Pickle. Cows and calves are a different matter. They are lean, quiet and tawny, and soft meadow names like Clover, Willow, Fern and Sprig suit them, as do calf names that sound small and spotted, such as Dapple, Nubbin and Freckles.
The list draws on the places elk live and the things they eat. Rocky Mountain range and park names (Teton, Absaroka, Estes, Banff) read as strong, one-word elk names, and so do the plants of elk country: Aspen, Lodgepole, Fireweed, Kinnikinnick, Balsamroot. Hunter and biologist slang adds Raghorn, Spike, Brow Tine and Sixpoint. For a mascot or story elk you will also find frontier names (Bridger, Zebulon, Clementine), Highland red-deer names from Scotland (Hamish, Eilidh, Glencoe), Scandinavian names for the European cousins, and puns on the word itself: Elkanah, Elkton, Elmer, Wally Wapiti.
Pick by the animal's sex and age first, then by where it lives. A Roosevelt elk from the Olympic rainforest sounds right as Moss or Hemlock; a Tule elk from California grassland can carry Sierra or Tule itself.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the animal: heavy, one-syllable words (Bugle, Flint, Tank) for mature bulls, softer two-syllable plant names (Clover, Willow, Tansy) for cows, and small or spotted words (Sprig, Dapple, Nubbin) for calves.
- Borrow from elk country. Range names (Sawtooth, Wasatch), rivers and parks (Yellowstone, Banff) and forage plants (Aspen, Fireweed) all sound like they belong on an elk.
- For a mascot or plush, lean into the puns and alliteration: Elkanah, Elkton, Wally Wapiti, Bugle Boy. They are easy to remember and easy to put on a jersey.
- If you are naming a wild elk you watch regularly, use a feature you can actually see from a distance, such as a broken tine (Old Seven, Sixpoint) or a scar, so you can tell it apart each season.
- Avoid names that only work in one season. Blizzard is fun in January, but a bull named September is still September in the spring.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an elk and a wapiti?
They are the same animal. Wapiti is a Shawnee and Cree word meaning 'white rump' and is used for the North American and East Asian elk (Cervus canadensis). In Europe, 'elk' means the animal North Americans call a moose, which is why wapiti is the less ambiguous name and appears in this list as a name itself.
What are good names for a bull elk?
Bull names should sound big and a little loud, because bull elk bugle during the fall rut. Bugle, Granite, Thunder, Teton, Brutus, Titan, Raghorn and Sixpoint all fit, as do old frontier names like Bridger, Boone and Zebulon.
What should I name a baby elk or calf?
Elk calves are born spotted and weigh around 35 pounds, so small and spotted names work: Sprig, Dapple, Speckle, Freckles, Nubbin, Pip, Button and Sprout. Many people pick a name the calf can grow into, like Aspen or Juniper.
Are there famous elk names I can use?
The best-known fictional elk is Elliot from Open Season, and Bullwinkle (technically a moose) is often borrowed for big-antlered animals. The Roosevelt, Tule and Manitoban subspecies give you Roosevelt, Teddy, Tule and Manitoba as ready-made names with a real connection to the species.
