Generate names for invented art movements and schools: coined isms like Thresholdism and Pentimentism, compounds like Post-Chromatic Abstraction, schools and circles like The Tannery Row School and The Blue Door Group, critics' insults like The Unvarnished, and foreign forms like Der Graue Kreis.

About art movement names

Art movements get their names in a handful of ways, and this list of 1,000 invented ones follows all of them. The plainest is the coined ism, built from a technique, a material or an idea: Thresholdism or Afterimagism. A prefix dates a movement against what came before, so Post-Chromatic Abstraction and Anti-Perspective sound like replies to an argument, while an adjective on an established term, such as Domestic Surrealism or Lyrical Brutalism, sounds like a regional branch.

Other movements are named for where their painters worked or how they organized. The real Hudson River School and Barbizon School took their names from places, which is the model for The Tannery Row School and The Maris Bay Colony. Circles, societies and secessions, such as The Blue Door Group or The Coldharbor Secession, are named like artist associations. Some labels started as mockery: Impressionism comes from a critic's joke about a Monet title in 1874, and the Fauves were called wild beasts in 1905. The Unvarnished and The Smudgers borrow that habit.

The list also holds French, German, Italian, Russian and Japanese forms (Der Graue Kreis, La Ligne Tremblée, Usuzumi-ha), manifesto titles, digital currents like Glitch Baroque, and deadpan parody. A coinage can still match a real group by accident, so search a name before you publish it.

How to choose art movement names

  • Pick the form by how the movement began. Friends who share a studio become a School or a Circle, a published statement becomes a Manifesto or a New something, and a hostile review becomes a nickname like The Mud Painters.
  • Date the movement with its prefix. Proto- names are given by later historians, Neo- names announce a revival, and Post- or Anti- names need an older movement in your world to push against.
  • Use a foreign form only where it fits the setting. Gruppe Nordfenster suits a German-speaking city, Scuola del Molo an Italian port, and a -ha ending marks a Japanese school.
  • Give the name a founding story of a line or two: who coined it, in which year, and whether the artists accepted it. A name the members hated is often the one that sticks.
  • For published work, search the name first. Art history is crowded with small groups, and an invented ism can turn out to exist.

Frequently asked questions

How are art movements usually named?

Most names come from one of four sources: a coined ism, a place where the artists worked, the title of a group or exhibition, or a critic's insult that stuck. The list follows the same sources with invented examples, such as Scumblism, The Wick Street School, The Circle of the Pale Sun and The Wallpaperers.

Are these real art movements?

No. The 1,000 names are made up for fiction, games, worldbuilding and classroom exercises, and real movements such as Impressionism or Dada appear only as the base of invented variants like Indoor Impressionism and Sunday Dada. Art history has many small groups, so an invented name can still coincide with a real one. Search it before you rely on it.

What do the foreign-language names mean?

They are plain phrases in French, German, Italian, Russian and Japanese, with the Russian and Japanese ones in Latin letters. Der Graue Kreis is the gray circle, Les Peintres du Seuil is the painters of the threshold, and Usuzumi-ha is the pale ink school. Ask a native speaker before you print one on a cover.

Can I use these names for parody or a school project?

Yes. The deadpan entries, such as Waiting Room Sublime, Hotel Lobby Abstraction and Gift Shop Baroque, are written for satire. The plainer ones suit an art history exercise in which students invent a movement and write its manifesto.
