Find a title for the art book you are making: sketchbook cover names such as Loose Lines and Ink Before Breakfast, numbered volumes like Sketchbook No. 3, school coursework titles, artbook names and plain portfolio titles such as Selected Pages.

About art book names

An art book title does a different job from the title of a single picture. It sits on a cover or a spine, it has to hold a whole book of uneven work, and you read it every time you reach for the book. Titles that last take a few shapes: a plain description of what is inside (Studies and Roughs, Selected Pages), the medium (Field Notes in Gouache), a habit (Ink Before Breakfast), a number (Sketchbook No. 3, Volume Two: Still Learning) or one quiet word (Underdrawing, Hatchwork).

The 1,000 titles here cover the kinds of art book people make: sketchbook covers, school art books and coursework (Autumn Term Studies, Unit One: Natural Forms), numbered volumes that use terms and seasons instead of calendar years, artbooks built around invented projects (The Art of Lantern Tide), portfolios for applications and websites (Work So Far), theme books for figure, landscape, character and urban sketching (Thirty Second Poses, Rooftops and Wires, Cast List), art journals (Glue and Gesso) and funny titles for books that got messy (Not Finished Yet, Hands Are Hard).

Choose by who will read the cover. A sketchbook that lives in your bag can carry a joke. A portfolio is read by a stranger first, so a plain title works harder there.

How to choose art book names

  • Decide who reads the cover. A sketchbook that lives in your bag can be called Hands Are Hard or The Doodle Vault; a portfolio opened by a stranger is better served by Selected Pages or Work So Far.
  • Number a series from the first book. Sketchbook No. 3, Volume Seven and Year One keep a shelf in order, and a subtitle such as Volume Four: Color Arrives records what changed in that book.
  • Name the medium or the subject when the book has one. Field Notes in Gouache, Ballpoint Afternoons, Faces on the Train and Bus Stop Drawings say what is inside before anyone opens it.
  • For a school art book, find out what your teacher or course wants on the cover first, then add a title of your own underneath, such as Autumn Term Studies or Theme: Light and Dark.
  • Write the title in pencil until the book is half full. Many sketchbooks earn their name from what ends up in them, and a quiet word like Underdrawing or Roughs is easy to change.

Frequently asked questions

What should I name my sketchbook?

Name it after what goes in it or how you use it. Loose Lines, Mostly Pencil and Carried Everywhere suit an everyday sketchbook, Ink Before Breakfast suits a daily habit, and Not Finished Yet suits a book you do not want to be precious about. If you fill several a year, a number such as Sketchbook No. 3 is the title that never runs out.

What is a good title for an art portfolio?

Keep it plain and let the work speak. Selected Pages, Work So Far, Portfolio of Recent Work and Body of Work tell a reader what they are about to see without overselling it. These are titles for a cover page or a website heading, not usernames. If a school, course or employer gives its own instructions for labeling a portfolio, follow those first.

Can I use 'The Art of' for my own artbook?

Yes, when what follows is your own project. The list pairs the phrase with made-up worlds and stories, such as The Art of Lantern Tide and The Art of the Paper Lighthouse, as models for a webcomic, a game you are designing or a story of your own. Swap in your project's name, and before you print or sell a book, search the title yourself to see whether someone else already uses it.

Why do the numbered titles have no years in them?

A calendar year on a cover dates the book, and a dated title in a list would soon be out of date. The numbered and seasonal titles use forms that do not age, such as Volume Seven, Year One, Autumn Book and First Semester. You can always write the real date inside the cover.
