Generate Ars Magica names for a whole troupe: Hermetic magi such as Aurelius of Bonisagus, Caecilia of Flambeau and Morwenna ex Miscellanea, plus companions, grogs, Redcaps, familiars and covenants like Vigilia Nocturna and Fons Draconis.

About Ars Magica names

Ars Magica is set in Mythic Europe around 1220, and its names follow the people of that world. A magus of the Order of Hermes usually goes by a single Hermetic name, often Latin, followed by a House: Aurelius of Bonisagus, Caecilia of Flambeau, Wulfhild of Bjornaer. Eleven Houses take 'of'; the twelfth is written 'ex Miscellanea' because its name already carries the preposition. Some magi add a Latin byname that agrees in gender (Aurelia Nigra, Fausta Caeca, Publius Monoculus), and some name the master who trained them (Aulus filius Corvi, Albina filia Liviae).

Roughly two thirds of the 1,000 names are magi, with the twelve House tags spread evenly and vernacular names for the Tribunals: German on the Rhine, French in Normandy, English, Welsh and Irish in the west, Greek in Thebes, Slavic in Novgorod. The rest make up the troupe around them: companions with a title or trade (Sir Eustace Longspur, Brother Ambrose the Cellarer), grogs with barracks nicknames (Wat Brokenose, Kunz Eisenfaust), Redcaps of House Mercere, familiars, and covenants in Latin and the local tongue, such as Turris Corvorum and Rabenstein.

Given names are real Roman and medieval names, and almost none repeats, so you can name a whole covenant without doubling up.

How to choose Ars Magica names

  • Let the House shape the name. Bjornaer magi suit animal and Germanic names (Lupus of Bjornaer, Wulfhild of Bjornaer), Verditius suits craft names (Fabricius of Verditius, Pictor of Verditius), and a Guernicus judge can carry the title, as in Quaesitor Honorius of Guernicus.
  • Mind the gender of a Latin byname if you move it to another character: Niger becomes Nigra, Caecus becomes Caeca, Doctus becomes Docta. Senex, Sapiens, Exul and Humilis stay the same for a man or a woman.
  • Lineage names tie characters together. After filius or filia the master's name goes in the genitive: Corvus gives Corvi, Livia gives Liviae, Cato gives Catonis. If you are not sure of the form, write 'follower of' or 'pupil of' instead, as in Severinus, pupil of Macarius.
  • Give a covenant two names, a Latin one for Tribunal records and a local one the villagers use. Turris Corvorum and Tour des Corbeaux both mean a tower of ravens, so they work as one place.
  • For familiars, pair a short name with the animal. Fuligo the Raven uses the Latin word for soot, and Tibert the Tomcat and Isengrim the Old Wolf borrow from the medieval beast tales of Reynard the Fox.

Frequently asked questions

How are Ars Magica magus names formed?

Most magi use one Hermetic name, often Latin, and add their House: Varro of Bonisagus, Livia of Jerbiton, Rodrigo of Flambeau. A longer form adds a byname or a home town, such as Demetrius Niger of Tremere or Gottfried of Speyer, follower of Bonisagus. Lineage forms name the master instead, as in Servius filius Catonis.

Why do some names say 'ex Miscellanea' instead of 'of'?

The name of House Ex Miscellanea already contains the Latin preposition ex, so adding 'of' in front would double it. That is why the list has Morwenna ex Miscellanea and Ulf Weatherwise ex Miscellanea, while the other eleven Houses read 'of Tytalus' or 'of Merinita'. The Ex Miscellanea entries lean on hedge-tradition bynames like the Herb-Wife and the Dowser.

Does the list cover companions, grogs and covenants too?

Yes, about a third of it. There are companions such as Sister Clarice the Illuminator and Bonaccorso the Spicer, grogs such as Dickon Twice-Hanged and Jehan le Borgne, familiars such as Ferrugo the Fox, and covenants from Lacus Umbrarum to Wychmere Grange. Redcaps appear with their House, for example Redcap Giles of Mercere.

Is this an official Ars Magica tool, and are the names canon?

No. Ars Magica is a trademark of its owner, and this page is an unofficial fan resource with no tie to the publisher. The twelve House names are used only as affiliations, and the magi and covenants are written in the style of the setting for your own saga, so none of them is presented as a canon character or place.
