Generate Marauder-style nicknames for an Animagus, each taken from a feature of the animal form: Hatrack for a stag, Dogsbody for a dog, Bottlebrush for a cat, Nightshift for an owl, Slyboots for a fox and Rudder for an otter.

About Animagus names

In the Harry Potter books an Animagus is a witch or wizard who can turn into an animal at will, and the best-known ones carry nicknames to match. The Marauder's Map is signed by Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs: Padfoot for a dog, Prongs for a stag and Wormtail for a rat, with Moony for the friend who is a werewolf. Each is one short English word, the three Animagus names taken from a feature of the animal, and between them the four show the shapes a name can take: a compound (Padfoot, Wormtail), a plain noun (Prongs) and a -y form (Moony).

This list applies those shapes to many more animals. Nearly every entry points at something you could see or hear: feet, tail, ears, coat, markings, gait or call. A stag might be Hatrack or Tenpoint, a dog Dogsbody or Lolltongue, a cat Bottlebrush or Mittens, an owl Roundhead or Nightshift, a fox Slyboots or Brush, an otter Rudder or Fishbreath, a hare Boxer or Jinker, a snake Bootlace or Garters, a beetle Sevenspot or Wingcase. Bears, badgers, bats, hedgehogs, frogs, moles and birds of prey are covered too.

All of the nicknames are fan-made. The four Marauder names are the model and are left out of the list on purpose.

How to choose Animagus names

  • Start from the animal, then pick the feature your friends would tease you about. The Marauder names are affectionate mockery, which is why Hatrack, Fleabag and Fishbreath sound right.
  • Vary the shape inside a group of friends, as the four Marauders do. One compound (Splitfoot), one plain noun (Antlers, Whiskers, Coils) and one -y form (Scruffy, Tawny, Warty) read better together than three compounds.
  • Old country words make good nicknames because they already mean the animal: Brock for a badger, Tod or Reynard for a fox, Bruin for a bear, Hedgepig or Urchin for a hedgehog, Flittermouse for a bat and Grimalkin for a cat.
  • Keep it to one word that is easy to sign on a map or call down a corridor. If it needs explaining, choose a plainer feature.
  • Try the name in the formula the map uses: Messrs Longshanks, Slyboots and Pipsqueak. A set that scans well is a set worth keeping.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Animagus nickname?

It is a short nickname that hints at the animal a witch or wizard can turn into, on the pattern of Padfoot, Prongs and Wormtail. Most describe a feature of the animal form without naming the animal outright, so Chiseltooth suggests a beaver, and a few are old country words for the animal itself, such as Windhover for a kestrel.

How do I pick a nickname for my animal form?

Look for entries that describe your animal's most noticeable feature. For a dog try Houndstooth or Wetnose, for a cat Softpad or Twitchtail, for an owl Heartface or Hushwings, for a snake Forktongue or Shedskin, for a rat or mouse Whiptail or Stringtail, and for a mole Moleskin or Spadehands.

Are Padfoot, Prongs, Wormtail and Moony on the list?

No. Those four belong to the characters in the books and are used here only as the pattern. Every nickname on the list is fan-made, and none is an official name from the series.

Is Moony an Animagus name?

Not strictly. Moony is the nickname of Remus Lupin, who is a werewolf and not an Animagus, while his three friends became Animagi to keep him company. His name follows the same nickname pattern, which is why -y forms such as Tawny and Scruffy are included here.
