About Fullmetal Alchemist names

Fullmetal Alchemist names have a very specific texture because Hiromu Arakawa modelled Amestris on early twentieth-century Europe and filled it with surnames lifted from military hardware. Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, Jean Havoc, Heymans Breda, Vato Falman and Kain Fuery are all named after aircraft or aircraft makers; Grumman, Hakuro, Raven, Storch, Henschel and Heinkel continue the pattern among the generals and the Briggs soldiers, and Rebecca Catalina and Maria Ross keep it going in the rank and file. Given names are plain Germanic, French or English (Edward, Alphonse, Winry, Maes, Olivier; Izumi is the notable exception), so an original Amestrian character sounds right when you pair an old-fashioned European first name with a surname borrowed from a warplane, a gun maker or a classic car.

The other naming systems are just as deliberate. State Alchemists carry a title granted with their silver watch (Flame, Fullmetal, Strong Arm, Crimson Lotus, Sewing-Life, Iron Blood), usually one or two words describing their specialty. Homunculi are named for the seven deadly sins. Xingese characters use Chinese-style names such as Ling Yao, Lan Fan and May Chang, and Ishvalans have short, Semitic-sounding names, with Scar known only by his nickname.

  • State Alchemist titles are short and describe the alchemy, not the person: a glass specialist is the Glasswright Alchemist, not the Brilliant Alchemist. Put the title after the name, the way Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist, is introduced.
  • Xingese names follow Chinese order with the clan name second (Ling Yao is of the Yao clan); give members of the same clan the same second name to show the imperial succession politics.
  • Keep homunculus names to a single abstract vice; the canon seven are taken, so an original homunculus for fan fiction should use a related word like Avarice or Malice rather than a second Greed.
  • Place names in Amestris are English and German market-town names (Resembool, Dublith, Youswell, Baschool); avoid anything that sounds Japanese, since the story is deliberately set in a Western world.

Why are Fullmetal Alchemist characters named after planes and guns?

Hiromu Arakawa wanted Amestris to feel like an industrial-age military state, so she took surnames from WWII-era aircraft (Mustang, Hawkeye, Havoc, Breda, Falman, Fuery, Storch, Heinkel), manufacturers (Grumman, Henschel) and weapons. It gives the cast a shared texture without being obvious to casual readers, and it is the easiest rule to copy when naming an original character.

What are the names of the homunculi in Fullmetal Alchemist?

In the manga and Brotherhood they are Lust, Gluttony, Envy, Greed, Sloth, Wrath (King Bradley) and Pride (Selim Bradley), all created by Father, the Dwarf in the Flask. The 2003 anime keeps the sins but changes who they are: Wrath is a child, Sloth is Juliet Douglas, and Dante is the mastermind instead of Father.

Is Edward Elric's name based on anything?

Van Hohenheim takes his name from the real Renaissance alchemist Paracelsus, whose full name was Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.
