About adventure group names

An adventure group name has to survive being said a hundred times: shouted across a trailhead, typed into a group chat, or read aloud by a dungeon master introducing your party to a nervous village. The names that stick tend to follow one of a few structures. Fantasy companies use 'The [Adjective] [Object]' (The Grey Lanterns), 'Company of the [Thing]' (Company of the Broken Compass), or a place-plus-role compound (The Marchwardens, The Kingsroad Irregulars). Real-world expedition and hiking crews lean on landscape words like summit, ridgeline, cairn, switchback and timberline, often paired in an ampersand pattern (Summit & Sundown, Boots & Backroads).

The best names carry a story hook. A company named after a shared disaster (The Wrong Turn Club, The Sundered Chain) or a founding place (The Free Company of Harrow) gives your group a history that outsiders will ask about. Treasure-hunting outfits borrow from pulp adventure, with idols, tombs, keys and lost temples, while a travel crew might name itself after a route or a compass bearing.

Before committing, test the name in three forms: the full version for banners and campaign notes, a short version for everyday use (the Lanterns, the Rooks), and a version with 'the' dropped for a hashtag or Discord server. If all three work, you have a name that will outlast the first quest.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick a name with a natural short form: 'The Grey Lanterns' becomes 'the Lanterns' at the table or on the trail, which is how it will actually get used.
  • Tie the name to something your group has actually done or somewhere you have been; The Wrong Turn Club or The Free Company of Harrow beats a generic 'Heroes of Light' because it comes with a story.
  • For hiking, travel or expedition crews, use landscape and navigation words (ridgeline, cairn, latitude, portage) rather than fantasy titles so the name fits on a jacket patch.
  • Match tone to your group: pulp treasure-hunter names (The Skull and Compass) for a light campaign, formal charters (The Northreach Charter) for a serious one, and self-deprecating names for a friend group that mostly stops for snacks.
  • Check that the name is not already used by a well-known guild, band or brand if you plan to put it on merch, a website or a stream.
