Generate adventure names that read like the spine of a published module: dungeon crawls like The Tomb of the Serpent King, mysteries like Murder at Harrow's Crossing, expeditions, heists, sieges and rescues, plus sci-fi, pulp, western and horror titles for any tabletop system, video game quest log or story.

About adventure names

An adventure title does a different job from a campaign name. A campaign name has to carry a year of play, so it stays broad; an adventure title has to sell a single session or module, so it should name the hook. The strongest ones pair a concrete situation with a specific place: Murder at Harrow's Crossing tells the table it is a mystery in a town, Expedition to the Sunken Spire promises travel and a ruin, Siege of Thornmoor promises a clock and a wall. Published modules lean on a few frames, all here: the place-led title (The Tomb of the Serpent King), the event-led title (Mutiny on the Black Gull), the journey (Into the Gloaming Wood), the object (The Bone Flute), and the sentence-style title that hints at a twist (What the River Kept, The Merchant Who Sold the Sun).

Genre lives in the nouns. Abbeys, barrows and reliquaries read as fantasy; stations, decks and cargo holds read as sci-fi; scarabs, zeppelins and sky pirates read as pulp; gulches, claims and stagecoaches read as western. Swap the noun and the same frame changes genre, so most titles here adapt to your world by swapping the place name.

Use them for D&D and Pathfinder one-shots, investigation games, video game quest logs, or as chapter titles in an adventure novel.

How to choose adventure names

  • Name the hook, not the theme: players remember Ambush at Willowford or The Coronation Murders long after a generic title like Shadows of Destiny has blurred into every other session.
  • Swap the place name for one from your own setting before you use a title; Trouble at the Tanner's Gate becomes yours the moment the gate is one your players have walked through.
  • Match length to format: one-shots and convention slots want short, punchy titles (Snake Pit, Plague Ship, Wyvern Season), while a multi-session module can carry a longer sentence-style title.
  • Keep one title frame per series: if your first adventure is Murder at Harrow's Crossing, calling the sequel Treachery at Sablewick signals to players that it is the same kind of story.
  • Say it aloud as a session announcement ('Next week: Beneath the Salt Cathedral'); if it does not make at least one player ask a question, pick a title with a stronger hook.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good D&D adventure name?

A good adventure name states a concrete hook in a specific place and implies the kind of play to expect. Compare The Tomb of the Serpent King (a dungeon crawl with a named threat) with Murder at Harrow's Crossing (a town mystery) and Expedition to the Sunken Spire (a journey ending in a ruin). Each tells players what they will be doing, and each is easy to say aloud. Titles that only describe a mood, like Shadows of Fate, give the table nothing to hold on to.

How is an adventure name different from a campaign name?

A campaign name covers the whole arc and usually stays broad or thematic (The Ashfall Accord, Heirs of the Broken Oath) because it has to fit every adventure inside it. An adventure or one-shot name covers a single episode, so it should be specific: a place, an event, an object or a single question. Many groups use both, with a campaign title on the cover and an adventure title for each session, the way published hardcovers are split into chapters.

Can I use these names for video game quests or a novel?

Yes. Quest log entries work well with the shorter event-led titles (Rescue at Dagger Pass, Hunt for the White Stag, Bounty on the Black Heron) because they double as objectives. For a novel or serial, the sentence-style and object titles (The Merchant Who Sold the Sun, The Broken Compass) make natural chapter or episode names. All the names here are original and free to use; only avoid exact matches with published modules from the big publishers, which are easy to check with a quick search.

How do I adapt a fantasy title to sci-fi, horror or a western?

Keep the frame and change the nouns. Murder at Harrow's Crossing becomes Blackout on Deck Nine, Showdown at Dry Gulch or Night Shift at the Old Cannery without changing its shape. The list already includes a run of sci-fi (Derelict at Station Kessler), pulp (Race for the Jade Scarab), western (Ambush at Coyote Wells), modern horror (Static on Channel Zero) and post-apocalyptic titles (Convoy Through the Glass Belt) to use directly or as templates.
