Popeye Name Generator
Pun families, salty sailors, goons and odd critters
Browse 500 Popeye style names. The list holds character names from the comic strip and the cartoons, such as Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy and Swee'Pea, next to original names built the same way, like Peanut Oyl, Chuck Roast, Brawno, Gangplank Gramps and Chester the Kazoo Pig.
About Popeye names
Popeye first appeared in 1929 in Thimble Theatre, a newspaper comic strip by E. C. Segar that had been running since 1919, and the cartoons followed in 1933. The Oyl family are all oil puns: Olive, Castor, Cole and Nana. Ham Gravy is a plate of food with a first name. J. Wellington Wimpy is a grand name for a man after a free hamburger, Bluto and Brutus are blunt two-beat names for a bruiser, and Poopdeck Pappy joins a part of a ship to a family word. Odd animals get a plain first name and a made-up species, as in Eugene the Jeep and Bernice the Whiffle Hen.
Thirty-five names in this list are from the strip, the cartoons and the 1980 film, given as names only, and the FAQ lists them. The rest are new and built on the same patterns, not taken from the Popeye stories.
The new names come in several kinds: pun families (Peanut Oyl, Chuck Roast), salty sailors and nicknames (Gangplank Gramps, Sockeye), bruisers (Brawno), moochers and diner folk (H. Bartholomew Mooch, Blue Plate Bess), sea witches, goons and familiars, odd critters (Chester the Kazoo Pig), goofy royalty and professors (King Guffaw), ring names (One-Punch Pete), babies (Hon'Bun) and humble ships and harbor towns (The Leaky Tub).
How to choose Popeye names
- Build a pun family the way the strip does. Pick one pantry shelf and give everyone the same oddly spelled surname: Peanut Oyl, Sesame Oyl and Canola Oyl could be cousins of the canon Oyls.
- Say a pun name quickly and out loud. Ham Gravy works because you hear a person first and a dish second, and Chuck Roast, Patty Melt and Artie Choke pass the same test.
- For a big lug, keep it to two beats and end on an o or an us, the way Bluto and Brutus do. Brawno, Stompo and Scowlus all sound like trouble without being scary for small children.
- Naming a pet? Use the odd critter recipe: a plain old-fashioned first name, then "the", then a species you make up. Opal the Noodle Newt and Winston the Pocket Whale are built that way.
- For a boat, a bath toy fleet or a trivia team, a humble ship name is funnier than a grand one. The Leaky Tub, H.M.S. Hiccup and The Dizzy Dinghy are in the list.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Popeye character names?
The main cast is Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto or Brutus depending on the cartoon, Wimpy, Swee'Pea, Poopdeck Pappy, Eugene the Jeep, the Sea Hag and Alice the Goon. Around them are Castor Oyl, Cole Oyl and Nana Oyl, Ham Gravy, Rough House, George W. Geezil and the nephews Pipeye, Peepeye, Pupeye and Poopeye. Those names are all in this list, which is a starting point for fans and not a full record of the cast.
Which names here are from Popeye and which are new?
Thirty-five entries are names from the comic strip, the cartoons and the 1980 film: Popeye, Popeye the Sailor, Olive Oyl, Bluto, Brutus, Wimpy, J. Wellington Wimpy, Swee'Pea, Poopdeck Pappy, Eugene the Jeep, the Sea Hag, Alice the Goon, Bernard, Castor Oyl, Cole Oyl, Nana Oyl, Ham Gravy, Rough House, George W. Geezil, Pipeye, Peepeye, Pupeye, Poopeye, Oscar, Toar, King Blozo, Bernice the Whiffle Hen, Professor Wotasnozzle, John Sappo, Shorty, Granny, Popeye Jr., Sweethaven, Dice Island and Goonland. Every other name, such as Cod Liver Oyl, Hammond Eggs, Agnes the Goon or Professor Wotaracket, is a new idea in the same style and was not taken from the Popeye stories; a match with a minor character would be chance. This page is a fan resource with no link to King Features or the makers of the cartoons.
How do I invent a name that sounds like the comic strip?
Pick the pattern that fits the character. A family gets a shared pun surname, a moocher gets an initial and a grand middle name like R. Pemberton Crumb, a grumbler gets a middle initial like Elmer J. Crabapple, and a baby gets a sweet word with an apostrophe like Snap'Pea. For a professor, squeeze a spoken phrase into one surname, as in Professor Izzatso.
What is a good Popeye style name for a pet or a boat?
For a pet, the canon names Wimpy, Swee'Pea and Eugene all work, and from the new part of this list Sockeye, Toots, Li'l Skipper or Gladys the Gull would suit a cat, a dog or a bird. For a boat, try The Barnacle Belle, The Squeaky Oar or S.S. Second Helping.
