The original Wu-Name generator was a late-1990s web toy that turned your real name into a two-word alias in the style of the Wu-Tang Clan: an off-kilter adjective (Sarkastik, Misunderstood, Irate, Ol' Dirty) welded to a title (Genius, Warlock, Ambassador, Swami). Its most famous output is Childish Gambino, which Donald Glover typed in as a joke and kept. That format works because it mirrors how the Clan actually named themselves. Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and Ol' Dirty Bastard are all a descriptor plus a role, spelled with attitude.

The real Wu-Tang names draw on four wells. Kung-fu cinema gave the group its Shaolin mythology, the 36 Chambers and aliases like Liquid Swords and Shogun Assassin. Five Percenter teachings supplied attributes such as Supreme, Divine, Justice, Wise and Born, which members used as first names and in verses. Comic books gave Ghostface his Tony Starks and Ironman personas and Method Man his Johnny Blaze. And Staten Island itself, rebranded as Shaolin, gave them Park Hill, Stapleton and the ferry.
