Tang Dynasty Name Generator
Chinese names from the Tang era, 618 to 907
Tang dynasty names in pinyin, family name first: emperors, chancellors, poets, generals, court ladies and monks, each with a short label, plus original names built the way Tang families named children, such as Cui Yuanzhi, Dugu Yan, Wei Zhaorong and Lu Sanniang.
About Tang dynasty names
A Tang name is written family name first, then a given name of one or two characters, so Pei Du is Mr. Pei. The imperial house was Li, and around it stood a few great clans, the Cui, Lu, Zheng and Wang among them, whose members named their clan seat with pride: Lady Cui of Boling, Lu Zhaoji of Fanyang. Old northern families of steppe descent kept two-character surnames such as Dugu, Yuwen and Zhangsun, and Sogdian families at court used An, Kang, Shi, Cao, He and Mi.
Everyday address was different again. Friends called each other by seniority among the cousins of one generation, which is why Tang poems are addressed to Dong Da or Liu Shijiu, Liu Nineteen. Daughters were recorded the same way with niang added (Lu Sanniang, third daughter of the Lu family), palace women by rank (Wei Zhaorong), and monks by a dharma name and their temple.
Nearly half of the list comes from the records and stories of the period: emperors under their personal names, chancellors, generals, poets, painters, Chan masters, court ladies, and the heroes of Tang tales and later romances, each with a title or a short label in parentheses. Names without one are original, built from surnames and name characters of the period.
How to choose Tang dynasty names
- Drop the label when you borrow a historical name. The words in parentheses are our note on who the person was, not part of the name.
- Give siblings a shared character, as Tang families did. The palace scholars Song Ruoxin, Song Ruozhao and Song Ruoxian all carry Ruo.
- Use a seniority name for everyday speech. A man written up as Pei Yuanxun in the records can simply be Pei Shiliu, Pei Sixteen, to his friends.
- Match the form to the person: a clan seat for an aristocrat (Wang Sigong of Taiyuan), a palace rank for a court lady (Pei Jieyu), a dharma name and temple for a monk (Daojing of Ximing Temple).
- Read the label before you hand a real name to a hero. Lai Junchen was a feared interrogator and Zhu Ci a rebel who took the throne in Chang'an, so those names arrive with a reputation.
Frequently asked questions
What were common names in the Tang dynasty?
Li was the imperial surname, and Wang, Zhang, Liu, Cui, Lu, Zheng, Pei, Wei and Du fill the records of the court. Given names had one or two characters and leaned on virtue, learning and loyalty. On the list, Pei Du and Ma Sui show the one-character style, while Du Ruhui and Zhang Jianzhi show the two-character style.
Which names on the list are real people?
Most names with a label in parentheses are recorded people, such as Li Longji (Emperor Xuanzong), Meng Jiao (poet) or Gongsun Daniang (sword dancer), and so are the princesses listed by title. Characters of Tang tales, of legend and of later romances and operas set in the Tang are labeled as such, like Nie Yinniang or Fan Lihua. Names with no label are original, although a period-style name can always coincide with a person in the records.
How were Tang dynasty women named?
A woman kept her father's surname for life, and records often give only that, with the clan seat: Lady Zheng of Xingyang. At home she might be called by birth order, as in Pei Qiniang, the seventh daughter, and in the palace by rank, as in Cui Zhaoyi. Entertainers often used doubled names, which is why the list has Guan Panpan and Zheng Juju.
Why do some names look so different from the others?
The Tang court was full of people from beyond the Chinese heartland. Ashina was the ruling clan of the Turks, and men such as Ashina She'er served the Tang, alongside commanders from the Korean kingdoms, Khotan and Tibet. For Turkic, Korean and Tibetan names the list keeps to recorded people, each with a label. The only original names in this group pair a Sogdian surname with a Chinese given name, like An Fengguo, as settled families did.
