Generate phantom names in every sense of the word: period-accurate names for the restless dead, legend-style titles like the Lantern Man of Blackmere, masked opera-house phantoms and aliases, ethereal single names, and the phantom ships and trains of real folklore.
About phantom names
A phantom is a ghost with a reputation. An ordinary haunting is a cold spot and a creaking stair; a phantom has a story attached, and its name carries it. Folklore names phantoms by what they did or how they appear: the Lantern Man, the Weeping Bride of Marrowick, the Coachman Who Never Arrives, the Boy Who Knocks Thrice. The structure is a role or image plus (optionally) a place, and that specificity makes the legend feel real. Phantom vessels follow suit: the Flying Dutchman, the Palatine Light, the Caleuche, the Lady Lovibond.
The other great phantom tradition is the masked one. Gaston Leroux's Erik is the Opera Ghost and the Angel of Music long before anyone learns his name; Lee Falk's Phantom is the Ghost Who Walks; Danny Phantom is a kid with a pun. Names in this register are aliases: Nightmask, the Grey Cavalier, Monsieur Minuit, the Scarlet Domino. They promise a face under the mask and a person under the legend.
When a phantom needs a human name from life, period matters. Victorian and Edwardian names (Ottilie Vance, Thaddeus Pike, Mercy Thornquist) suit most haunted houses, and a soft, faded surname, Ashcombe, Gallowmere, Sallow, keeps the name feeling half-gone. Ethereal single names (Eidolon, Vesper) round things out for spirits, companions and game handles.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide whether your phantom is known or unknown. A mystery phantom gets a descriptive title (the Girl on the Stair); once the living learn who it was, reveal the human name for the payoff.
- Anchor legend names to a specific place or object: the Lantern Man of Blackmere is scarier than the Lantern Man because someone could go and check.
- For a masked phantom, choose an alias that hints at where it haunts, such as a theater (the Box Five Phantom), a rooftop or a ballroom, rather than a generic scary word.
- Match the human name to the century the phantom died in. Ottilie, Ichabod and Prudence sell a nineteenth-century haunting; modern names break it.
- Ethereal single names (Eidolon, Vesper, Umbriel, Spectrelle) work best for friendly phantoms, spirit companions, pets and usernames; save titles and full names for horror.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a phantom and a ghost?
In everyday use they overlap, but phantom usually implies a vivid, often visible apparition with a legend attached, and it is also used for illusory things (phantom ship, phantom limb, phantom pain). Ghost is the broader word for any spirit of the dead. A phantom can also be a living person who haunts a place in disguise, as in The Phantom of the Opera.
What is the Phantom of the Opera's real name?
Erik. In Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel he is called the Opera Ghost (le Fantôme de l'Opéra) and the Angel of Music by the people of the Palais Garnier, and his given name is revealed late in the book. He has no surname.
What are famous phantom ships and phantom trains?
The Flying Dutchman is the best known, followed by the Palatine Light off Block Island, the Lady Lovibond of the Goodwin Sands, the Caleuche of Chiloé, the Teazer Light of Nova Scotia and the abandoned Ourang Medan and Baychimo. Phantom trains include the St. Louis ghost train of Saskatchewan and the Lincoln funeral train said to run every April.
Can I use these phantom names for my story, game or OC?
Yes. The invented titles, aliases and human names are free to use. Folklore phantoms such as the Flying Dutchman are public domain; named characters like Erik, Kit Walker and Danny Phantom are protected and are listed as reference and inspiration only.
