Witcher Monster Name Generator
Bestiary species and contract-board beasts of the Continent
Browse 1,000 monster names in the style of The Witcher: bestiary species such as Grave-Nettle Hag and Hollowmare, folklore beings such as Strzyga and Południca, and village contract names such as Old Splinterjaw and The Widow of Crow's Ford.
About Witcher monster names
Monsters in The Witcher get their names in two ways. The first is the bestiary name of the species, and many of those come straight out of Slavic and northern folklore: the striga is the Polish strzyga, the noonwraith echoes the południca that haunts the fields at midday, and the drowner recalls the utopiec, a drowned soul that pulls others under. The second is the name frightened villagers pin to a notice board, which is less a name than a report of the trouble: where the thing lives, whom it took, what it sounds like at night.
This list of 1,000 names covers both. About four in every hundred are monsters from the books and games, marked (canon) as style anchors. Roughly a hundred more are beings of Slavic, Baltic and northern European folk belief, each marked with its origin. Everything else is new and written in the same register: corpse-eaters, specters named for the way they died, cursed people, relicts of the deep woods, vampires, draconids and hybrids, water dwellers, insectoids and trolls.
The contract names suit a game master who needs one memorable beast: Old Splinterjaw, The Widow of Crow's Ford, Whatever Lives in Hanka's Well. Their places are invented, so they fit any campaign.
How to choose Witcher monster names
- Pick the class first, the way a bestiary does: necrophage, specter, cursed one, relict, vampire, draconid or hybrid. A species name such as Barrow Glutton or Threshing-Floor Wraith tells players what kind of fight is coming.
- For a single contract, use a village nickname instead of a species. The Bell-Ringer of the Flooded Chapel hides what the monster is, and finding out is the investigation.
- Name a specter for the death or the wrong that made it. Famine Maiden, The Bricked-Up Monk and The Bride Who Waited each hand you a backstory and a way to lift the curse.
- Treat the folklore names as what they are. An entry marked with an origin, such as Utopiec (Polish folklore), is a being of folk belief, so read up on it before you rewrite its habits.
- Swap the invented place in a name for one from your own map: The Weeper of Hazel Weir becomes the weeper of whichever river your players have to cross.
Frequently asked questions
Are these monsters from The Witcher books and games?
A small share are, and each of those carries the label (canon): Striga (canon), Leshen (canon) and Drowner (canon), for example. The rest are folklore beings marked with their origin, or new names written in the style of the setting. This page is fan-made and has no connection to Andrzej Sapkowski or CD Projekt Red.
Which names come from Slavic folklore?
Every entry with an origin in parentheses is a being of folk belief, for example Strzyga (Polish folklore), Południca (Polish folklore), Bannik (Russian folk belief) and Vodník (Czech folk tale). The label names the tradition and nothing more, so the list states no meanings. Entries with no label are new names, though some build on a familiar creature type such as a troll, a griffin or a wyvern, or on a species of the setting such as a drowner, a nekker or a fleder.
How do villagers name a monster on a contract?
A notice-board name tends to describe the trouble instead of the species: a place, a victim or a sound. Old Splinterjaw, Auntie Longarm and What Came Back from the Bog follow that habit. So do the entries that begin with the word Contract, such as Contract: The Ferry That Returns Empty.
Can I use these names in a tabletop campaign or fan fiction?
Yes. The invented names are meant for homebrew bestiaries, one-shot contracts and stories. The canon names are the setting's own, so use them as references in fan work instead of passing them off as your creations.
