Leshy Name Generator

The leshy (Russian leshiy, from les, forest) is the master of the woods in Slavic folklore. He can stand as tall as the pines or shrink to hide under a leaf, his eyes glow green, his shoes are on the wrong feet, and he casts no shadow. Every Slavic region had its own name for him: Lisovyk in Ukraine, Borowy or Boruta in Poland, Lesovik or Lesnoy Ded ("forest grandfather") in Russia. Peasants who feared saying his name outright used respectful titles such as Lesnoy Khozyain, "master of the forest."

Good leshy names come from that same soil. Many are built from a tree word plus a possessive suffix: Dubovik from dub (oak), Sosnovik from sosna (pine), Berezovik from bereza (birch). Others describe his behaviour, like Sheptun (whisperer), Svistun (whistler), or Zaputay (the one who tangles paths). A third approach gives him an old Slavic personal name with a strong meaning, such as Svyatogor, Radomir, or Ratibor, which works well if the leshy is a character with dialogue rather than a lurking presence.

For a female forest spirit use the feminine forms Leshachikha or Lisunka; for a young one, Leshonok. Titles like Knyaz Lesnoy (forest prince) or Storozh Dubravy (warden of the oak grove) suit a leshy who rules a specific wood in your setting.
