About Wisconsin town names

A Wisconsin map reads like a list of everyone who passed through. The oldest names were kept from the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk languages, in spellings that French and English speakers wrote down by ear: Waukesha, Kaukauna, Weyauwega, Mukwonago, Kewaunee. French fur traders left Fond du Lac, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Butte des Morts and Lac du Flambeau. The lead rush of the 1820s and 1830s put Mineral Point, New Diggings and Leadmine on the map in the southwest.

Then came the farm settlers, and they named towns for home. Germans left Germantown, New Holstein, Kiel and Freistadt. Belgians left Brussels, Namur and Rosiere on the Door peninsula, the Dutch founded Oostburg and Friesland, Norwegians settled around Westby and Scandinavia, Swedes left Stockholm and West Sweden, and Polish settlement left Pulaski, Sobieski and Polonia.

This list holds 1,000 names. Most are real cities, villages, towns and crossroads from every corner of the state: the Driftless ridges and coulees, the Northwoods lake country, the Door County harbors, the Fox Valley and the dairy belt. A small share are invented on the same patterns, such as Hemlock Rapids and Cranberry Siding. Milwaukee, Madison and the other largest cities are left out on purpose.

How to choose Wisconsin town names

  • Match the name to the region. Ridge and valley names fit the Driftless southwest (St. Joseph Ridge, Bear Valley), lakes and waters fit the Northwoods (Three Lakes, Manitowish Waters), and harbors and bays fit Door County (Egg Harbor, Sister Bay).
  • For a crossroads settlement, take a surname and add Corners, the way Hales Corners, Keowns Corners and Tess Corners did.
  • Use one oddity per story. Embarrass, Luck, Spread Eagle and Ubet are all real, but three of them on one map turn it into a joke.
  • Say the name with a lettered county highway in front of it, as in "take County K out to Poy Sippi". If it sounds like directions somebody's uncle would give, it works.
  • The list mixes real and invented names, so look a name up on a map before you treat it as fictional or as real.

Locals say WAW-kih-shaw for Waukesha, kuh-KAW-nuh for Kaukauna, SHAW-no for Shawano and wy-uh-WEE-guh for Weyauwega. If your story has a visitor in it, a mangled Mukwonago or Ashwaubenon is an easy and friendly joke, because Wisconsinites hear those attempts all the time.

Are Embarrass, Luck and Spread Eagle really on the map?

Yes. Embarrass is a village in Waupaca County, Luck is in Polk County, Spread Eagle is in Florence County and Egg Harbor is in Door County. Ubet and Imalone are tiny unincorporated spots in the northwest. The invented oddities in the list follow the same plainspoken habit.

Why are Milwaukee and Madison not in the list?

The list leans toward small towns, villages and crossroads, because those are the names people want for a fictional setting. Mid-size cities such as Oshkosh, Appleton and Eau Claire are in, but the five largest (Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Kenosha and Racine) are left out: they bring their own skylines and histories with them, while a name like Blue Mounds or Sawdust Landing leaves room for your own.
