Warrior Nickname Generator
War-names, epithets and sobriquets from every battlefield
Generate warrior nicknames that stand on their own: historic war-names like the Lionheart, Africanus and the One-Eyed Dragon, soldiers' nicknames like Stonewall and Mad Jack, and original battle names such as Ironjaw, the Red Wolf and Widow's Bane.
About this generator
A warrior's nickname is rarely chosen by the warrior. Richard I of England was the Lionheart to friend and foe, Edward of Woodstock was only called the Black Prince long after his death, and Thomas Jackson became Stonewall when another general pointed at his brigade standing firm at First Bull Run in 1861. The name that sticks is the one other people find worth repeating.
Every fighting culture has its own pattern. Roman generals took a victory title from the land or people they had beaten, so Scipio became Africanus after Zama and the Metelli collected Numidicus, Creticus and Macedonicus. El Cid comes from the Arabic for "lord", and his Spanish title El Campeador marks a champion of the battlefield. Japanese warlords earned beast and demon names: Date Masamune was the One-Eyed Dragon and Takeda Shingen the Tiger of Kai. Modern armies like something shorter and drier, such as Chesty, Mad Jack or Old Blood and Guts.
Roughly half of this list is historical nicknames like these. The rest is original: compound battle names (Ironjaw, Shieldbreaker), short epithets (the Red Wolf, the First Spear), longer titles (the Warden of the Pass), phrase names (Holds-the-Line) and barracks nicknames (Short Fuse, Half Rations). None of them is a full name, so each one attaches to whatever your character is already called.
Tips for choosing a name
- Let someone else give the name. A nickname that comes from one event (the bridge he held, the helmet she lost) sounds truer than one a character picks for himself, so decide what happened first.
- Match the form to the culture. A legion veteran suits a Latin victory title like Dacicus or Parthicus, a knight suits the Flower of Chivalry, and a company sergeant suits Patches or Old Reliable.
- Use the nickname after the given name or in place of it, depending on who is speaking: Aldric the Unbent at court, just Bulwark in the shield wall.
- Keep the long titles for heralds and enemies. The Victor of a Hundred Fields is how a rival announces her, and her own company will shorten it within a week.
- An ironic name works as well as a fierce one. The biggest fighter in the unit answering to Tiny, or a cautious veteran called Short Fuse, tells a story in a word or two.
Frequently asked questions
Are the nicknames on this page historical?
Roughly half are. The Lionheart, the Black Prince, Africanus, El Cid, the One-Eyed Dragon, Stonewall and Mad Jack all belonged to real commanders or soldiers. The rest, such as Ironjaw, the Red Wolf, Widow's Bane and the Warden of the Pass, are original and written to sound like them. The list does not mark which is which, so look a name up before you lean on its history.
What is the difference between a warrior nickname and a warrior name?
A warrior name is a full name for a character: a given name and sometimes a family name. A nickname is what the army, the enemy or the chroniclers added on top, such as the Bold, Longsword or the Hammer of the Scots. Every entry here is a nickname only, so pair it with a name from one of the warrior name generators.
How did Roman generals get names like Africanus and Germanicus?
A victorious commander could take an extra name, called an agnomen, from the land or people he had defeated. Scipio became Africanus after beating Hannibal at Zama, and Germanicus was granted to Drusus for his campaigns in Germania and passed to his son. Later emperors stacked up titles such as Dacicus, Parthicus and Gothicus. In a fantasy setting the same pattern suits any legion-style army.
Can I use these as gamertags or call signs?
Yes. One-word names such as Deadeye, Bulwark, Thunderclap and Onslaught are short enough for a gamertag, a call sign or a jersey. Historical nicknames belonged to real people, so think about who carried a name before you wear it.
