Generate canon-style Warrior Cats kit names, from classic prefixes like Firekit and Sorrelkit to rarer picks such as Yarrowkit and Kestrelkit. Each prefix is chosen to grow naturally into an apprentice and warrior name later.

About warrior cats kit names

In the Warriors series a cat's name begins in the nursery. The queen (sometimes with the father) chooses a prefix on the day of birth and attaches the suffix -kit, so every newborn is Firekit, Sorrelkit, or Squirrelkit until they reach six moons and become an apprentice. Because the prefix stays for life, choosing a kit name is really choosing the first half of a future warrior name, and the best ones leave room to grow into something like Yarrowkit to Yarrowpaw to Yarrowleaf.

Canon prefixes fall into a few families: pelt colour and pattern (Gray-, Tawny-, Dapple-, Spotted-), local plants (Bramble-, Sorrel-, Heather-, Nettle-), forest animals and birds (Mouse-, Hawk-, Wren-, Otter-), and weather or landscape (Frost-, Storm-, Brook-, Pebble-). Queens also occasionally name kits after body features (Crooked-, Half-, One-, Long-) or the circumstances of birth (Snow-, Sleet-, Storm-). Prefixes taken from things Clan cats have never seen, such as Diamond- or Angel-, are considered non-canon by most of the fandom.

Every name in this list ends in -kit and uses a prefix that would sound natural in the books, including plenty of rarer options so your litter is not full of the same names as the main characters. Pair siblings by theme (Wrenkit, Sparrowkit, Finchkit) or by contrast (Sootkit and Snowkit) to make a litter that feels intentional.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the prefix with the warrior name in mind: say the kit name, then try three or four adult suffixes (Larchkit to Larchfall, Larchwhisker, Larchstripe) before deciding.
  • Litters in the books often share a theme, so consider naming siblings after related plants, birds, or colours to make the litter feel like a set.
  • Base the prefix on something visible at birth. Queens name kits for pelt colour, markings, or the weather that day far more often than for personality.
  • Keep it to two syllables where possible. Short prefixes like Wren-, Bee-, and Twig- give the fastest, most kit-like sound and are easy to shout across a camp.
  • Avoid names already used for major canon characters if your kit is an OC; a rarer prefix such as Yarrow-, Tansy-, or Kestrel- keeps them from being confused with book cats.

Frequently asked questions

Who names kits in Warrior Cats?

The mother chooses the name in most cases, sometimes with input from the father. Kits are named at birth, and the prefix chosen then stays with the cat for the rest of its life.

When does a kit lose the -kit suffix?

At six moons old the kit is apprenticed and receives -paw. After training, usually around twelve moons, the Clan leader gives them their full warrior name with a permanent suffix.

Can kits be named after StarClan or the moon?

It is rare and generally avoided. Star- is reserved for leaders and StarClan, and Moon- is tied to sacred places. Most fans treat both as off-limits for realistic kit names.

Are all these kit names canon?

Some appear in the books (Firekit, Sorrelkit, Bramblekit) and many are original but built from canon prefixes and naming rules, so they fit seamlessly into fanfiction and roleplay.
