Generate virtue names for a baby, a character or a pen name: classic English virtue names like Grace, Verity and Clemency, Puritan rarities like Thankful and Hopestill, and names meaning faith, peace, patience or wisdom in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Swahili, Japanese, Sanskrit and more.

About virtue names

Virtue names are given names that state a quality the parents hope the child will carry: Grace, Hope, Patience, Verity, Constance. In English they took off among 16th and 17th century Puritans, who rejected saints' names and turned instead to plain English words (Prudence, Temperance, Mercy), Latin-derived ones (Clemency, Felicity, Honora) and the famous hortatory names like Thankful, Hopestill, Increase and Praise-God. A few stayed in continuous use, Grace and Hope above all, and the quieter Latin forms such as Verity, Amity and Clemency have come back strongly since the 2000s.

Most languages have their own virtue names, and they are often more common there than in English. Sophia is Greek for wisdom and Irene for peace; Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov are the Russian Faith, Hope and Love; Esperanza, Consuelo and Paz are everyday Spanish names; Imani, Amani and Neema mean faith, peace and grace in Swahili; Makoto and Tadashi mean sincerity and righteousness in Japanese; Satya, Shanti and Karuna are Sanskrit truth, peace and compassion; Amin, Sabira and Adil are trustworthy, patient and just in Arabic.

The best virtue names are ones you can happily say every day. Grace, Felix and Imani sit easily beside ordinary names, while Obedience, Silence and Hate-Evil belong to historical fiction. This generator mixes both so you can pick the register you want.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether you want a virtue word that reads as a normal name (Grace, Felicity, Constance) or one that announces itself (Verity, Temperance, Thankful); both work, but they signal very different things.
  • Look beyond English: Sophia, Irene, Esperanza, Imani, Makoto and Satya all carry virtue meanings without sounding like a Puritan revival.
  • For a girl-heavy field, masculine and unisex virtue names are worth hunting out: Felix, Justus, Clement, Valor, Prosper, Amin, Tadashi, Toivo and Themba.
  • If you are naming a character, match the virtue to the plot: Patience for someone who will be tested, Constance for someone who will be tempted, Verity for someone who lies.
  • Check how the name shortens. Temperance becomes Tempe or Tess, Prudence becomes Pru, Constance becomes Connie; make sure you like the everyday version too.

Frequently asked questions

What is a virtue name?

A virtue name is a given name taken directly from a moral quality or desirable trait: Grace, Hope, Faith, Patience, Prudence, Verity, Honor, Justice. The term usually refers to English word-names, but most languages have equivalents, such as Sophia (wisdom), Irene (peace), Imani (faith) or Satya (truth).

Are there virtue names for boys?

Yes, though fewer in English. Felix, Clement, Justus, Constantine, Valor, Prosper, Earnest and Noble are established options, and other languages offer many more: Amin and Adil (Arabic), Makoto and Tadashi (Japanese), Toivo and Onni (Finnish), Themba and Mandla (Zulu), Traugott and Leberecht (German).

What were Puritan virtue names like?

Alongside familiar ones such as Prudence, Mercy and Temperance, Puritans used rarer choices like Thankful, Hopestill, Waitstill, Remember, Experience, Increase and Silence, plus hyphenated 'hortatory' names like Praise-God, Fear-Not and Stand-Fast. This generator includes the usable ones for historical characters.

Which virtue names are popular right now?

Grace, Hope, Faith and Felicity have never really left; Verity, Amity, Clemency, Honor, Mercy and Constance have risen as vintage revivals, and Sophia, Serenity, Harmony and Justice are common in recent years. Names like Patience, Prudence and Temperance remain rare and distinctive.
