Virtue names are given names that state a quality the parents hope the child will carry: Grace, Hope, Patience, Verity, Constance. In English they took off among 16th and 17th century Puritans, who rejected saints' names and turned instead to plain English words (Prudence, Temperance, Mercy), Latin-derived ones (Clemency, Felicity, Honora) and the famous hortatory names like Thankful, Hopestill, Increase and Praise-God. A few stayed in continuous use, Grace and Hope above all, and the quieter Latin forms such as Verity, Amity and Clemency have come back strongly since the 2000s.
