Unique Name Generator

A unique name is not the same as an invented one. Names like Elowen, Caspian, Ottoline and Peregrine are unusual because they sit far outside the top 1,000 in most English-speaking countries, yet each has history, a clear pronunciation and a spelling people can guess. That is the standard used for this list: real names that are rarely heard, rather than respellings of common ones or strings of syllables that look like a password.

The rare names here come from a few reliable sources. Vintage revivals such as Wilhelmina, Thaddeus and Araminta were ordinary a century ago and are almost unused now. Nature and word names (Bryony, Sorrel, Halcyon, Verity) read as modern without being made up. Mythological and literary names (Ianthe, Lysander, Andromeda, Evander) carry a built-in story. Uncommon names borrowed from Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Scandinavian, Persian, Yoruba, Hindi, Japanese and Spanish naming traditions add sounds English rarely produces on its own, and a set of gender-neutral picks (Marlowe, Ellis, Kestrel, Wilder) suits anyone.

For a baby, test the name with your surname and imagine it on a resume. For a character, check that it fits the setting's period and place; a rare name still has to feel like it belongs somewhere.
