Girl names move in clear cycles. Right now the English-speaking charts are dominated by soft, vowel-heavy names ending in -a or -ia (Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Aria), short vintage names that grandparents wore (Hazel, Ivy, Mabel, Edith), and nature or word names such as Willow, Wren, Juniper and Meadow. A hundred years ago the same charts were full of Dorothy, Margaret, Helen and Ruth, and those are quietly returning too, usually three or four generations after they last peaked.

The pool on this page is built to cover all of those styles rather than one. It mixes the current US and UK top 100 with long-standing classics (Charlotte, Eleanor, Katherine), the vintage revival set, nature and celestial names, and authentic girl names from Spanish, Italian, French, Scandinavian, Irish, Slavic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Indian, Japanese, Korean, African and Hawaiian naming traditions. Spellings are kept to one common form each, so you will not get five versions of the same name.

A girl name tends to work when it sounds natural with the surname, has a nickname she can choose or refuse (Elizabeth gives Eliza, Beth, Betsy and Liz), and will not date too hard. Reading a result aloud with your last name, then imagining it on a resume and a birthday card, is the fastest test.
