About Unggoy names
The Unggoy are the Grunts of Halo, the short and numerous foot soldiers of the Covenant, and their names sound the part. The names seen in the games and novels are brief and bouncy: a syllable doubled (Yapyap), a near-palindrome (Yayap, Dadab, Zawaz) or two rhyming halves, the shape of Flipyap. The plain names on this list keep to those shapes, with enough variety in consonants and vowels that a whole squad does not blur together.
About a fifth of the list puts a rank in front of a name. Minor, Major, Heavy, Ultra, Ranger and Spec Ops are grades players know from the games, and Deacon is the modest religious post an Unggoy can hold. Another fifth are epithets in the spirit of Yapyap the Destroyer, where a very small soldier takes a very large title: Zuzap the Mostly Brave, Dagag Who Held the Door.
The rest are nicknames, squad names for a lance of Grunts, and a short set of warren and clan names for the homeworld Balaho. Those place names are our own inventions, since the setting gives little to go on, so treat them as placeholders for your own story.
How to choose Unggoy names
- Say the name out loud in a squeaky voice. Unggoy names are meant to be yelped across a battlefield, so two quick syllables such as Wupwup or Zigzap beat anything long.
- Use rank to show a career. The same character can start as a Minor, earn Major and end as an Ultra, and the change of title tells readers that time has passed.
- Keep an epithet bigger than the Grunt. The joke in a name like Gazag the Self-Appointed is the gap between the title and the soldier, so give the grandest titles to the most nervous characters.
- Give each Grunt in a squad a different first consonant and vowel. Nepnep, Zuzuw and Glarb are easy to tell apart on the page; three names that differ by a single letter are not.
- For a tabletop or machinima cast, name the lance as well. The Orderly Panic or Lance of Many Naps gives the group one identity while individual Grunts come and go.
Frequently asked questions
What do Unggoy names sound like?
Short, bouncy and repetitive. Most are one or two syllables that double or rhyme, as in Nepnep, Yibyab and Zuzuw, with soft consonants like b, p, y and z. A few on the list break the pattern on purpose, such as Glarb and Kwozz, for characters who should stand out.
What ranks can a Halo Grunt hold?
In the games the familiar grades are Minor, Major, Heavy, Ultra, Ranger and Spec Ops, usually told apart by armor color. Deacon is a low religious post that the novels give to an Unggoy. The list pairs each of these with a name, such as Major Wepwep or Deacon Kwabb.
Are these names from the Halo games and books?
A handful, such as Yapyap, Yayap and Dadab, are well known from the series and are included as anchors for the style. The rest are new names in the same pattern, written for fan characters. They are not official Halo names.
Are the warren and clan names real Halo lore?
No. Entries such as Deepmuck Warren and Marshlight Clan are invented for this list, because we could not vouch for how Unggoy communities on Balaho are named in the published setting. Use them as starting points and rename freely.
