Ukulele Name Generator
Sunny pet names for four small strings
Find a pet name for your ukulele, from Little Lani, Pineapple and Koa Girl to Half Pint, Sunny Jim and The Duchess of Plink. The list covers sopranos, concerts, tenors and baritones, plus banjoleles and bass ukes.
About ukulele names
The ukulele took shape in Hawaiʻi in the 1880s, after immigrants from Madeira arrived with small four- and five-string instruments such as the machete and the rajão. Its name is usually translated as "jumping flea", and the tuning jingle most beginners learn is "My dog has fleas". An instrument with that history asks for a name that is small, sunny and a little bit silly, where guitar names tend to run road-worn.
This list holds 1,000 names in several styles. There are Hawaiian given names and everyday Hawaiian words, written with the ʻokina and kahakō (Nalu means wave, Honu turtle, Hōkū star, Manu bird). There are small-and-mighty names like Half Pint and Pocket Rocket, fruit and beach names, wood names for koa, mahogany and spruce tops, names by size for sopranos, concerts, tenors and baritones, strum and pluck wordplay, sweet old-fashioned names, and grand mock titles such as The Duchess of Plink. Banjoleles and bass ukes get names of their own.
The names that stick usually say something true about the instrument: its wood, its size, its color, the trip you bought it on or the first song it learned. Reroll until one sounds like yours, then change a word to fit.
How to choose ukulele names
- Start with what you can see. A koa top suggests Koa Girl or Curly Koa, a pineapple-shaped body suggests Pineapple Princess, and a bright painted finish suggests Flamingo or Bubblegum.
- Match the size. Half Pint and Pipsqueak suit a soprano, Tenor Tim or Big Bari a larger body, and Pocket Bass or Baby Bass a bass uke.
- If you choose a Hawaiian word, keep its ʻokina and kahakō and learn how to say it. The marks change the sound and sometimes the meaning.
- Say the name in a sentence such as "Pass me Sunny Jim". A name that makes you smile out loud is one you will keep using.
- A mock title works best on the smallest instrument. The gap between a soprano and a name like His Tiny Highness is the whole joke.
Frequently asked questions
Do people really name their ukuleles?
Many players do. Naming an instrument is an old habit among guitarists, and it carries over easily to something you can take to the beach, a campfire or a classroom. A name also helps when you own more than one size: it is quicker to ask for Mango than for the concert with the low G string.
What kinds of ukulele names are in the list?
The 1,000 names run from Hawaiian words such as Nalu, Honu and Hōkū to small-and-mighty names like Pocket Rocket, wordplay like Ukey Dokey and Strum Chum, and mock titles like Admiral Aloha and Lord Fretwell. There are also names for particular sizes, such as Soprano Sue and Baritone Barry.
How are the Hawaiian names in the list written?
Hawaiian words and given names are written with the ʻokina, the mark for the glottal stop, and the kahakō, the line over a long vowel, as in Hōkū and Lilikoʻi. Look a word up in a Hawaiian dictionary before you engrave it on a case or build a stage name around it.
Is there a name for a banjolele or a bass ukulele?
Yes. Banjo Baby, Banjolele Bess and Tin Pan Annie suit the bright, snappy sound of a banjolele. For a bass uke, which often has thick, rubbery strings, try Big Thumper, Bottom End Benny or Pocket Bass.
