Generate guitar brand names for a maker, a luthier's workshop or a gear line: Harrowgate Guitars, Tidewater Lutherie, Ironwood & Sons, Hollowmere Stringworks, Sixth Meridian Guitar Works. Founder surnames, tonewoods, rivers, birds and model-line names, for founders and for fiction.

About guitar brand names

Guitar makers name themselves in a handful of ways, and a player can often guess the kind of instrument from the name alone. The most familiar habit is the founder's surname, with or without Guitars, & Sons or Guitar Co. behind it. Small acoustic builders lean on Lutherie, Luthiers or Stringworks, while electric makers favor Custom Shop, Guitar Works and Mfg. A second family borrows from the landscape and the materials: rivers and coastlines, the woods a guitar is built from (spruce, koa, alder, ebony) and birds or animals that make a clean headstock logo.

This list holds 1,000 names across those styles and several more: vintage Americana for retro electrics, heavier marques for extended-range and multiscale guitars, quiet names for boutique flattops, and sister brands for basses, amplifiers, pedals, archtops, resonators and ukuleles. About a tenth are model-line names such as The Meridian or Ridgeline Standard, for the day the brand needs a catalog.

The headstock is the real test. A maker's name is inlaid, engraved or printed on a few inches of wood, so one or two short words read better from the back of a room than a long phrase. Nobody has compared these names with existing makers, so search before you order a logo.

How to choose guitar brand names

  • Sketch the name on a headstock outline before you fall for it: one or two short words fit a logo, while four words usually end up as initials.
  • Match the frame to the instrument. Lutherie and Luthiers read as handmade acoustics, Custom Shop and Guitar Works read as electrics, and Extended Range or Multiscale tells metal players the guitar is for them.
  • Leave room for a catalog. A name like Koa Line Guitars ties you to one wood, while a surname or a place can sit above any model you build later.
  • Say a brand and a model line together, for example Tidewater Lutherie and The Drifter, to hear whether they belong on the same instrument.
  • Search for guitar makers, amp builders and pedal companies with the same or a similar name before you print decals. Small builders are numerous, and two workshops with one name confuse buyers.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good guitar brand name?

It fits on a headstock, is easy to say across a shop counter and suits the instruments you build. Founder surnames, place names and tonewoods are the most common patterns, because they sound established and leave room for many models.

How do luthiers usually name their workshops?

Most use their own surname with a plain word after it, as in Lindqvist Lutherie or Pemberton & Sons. Others pick an image of the workbench or the home it sits in, such as Kitchen Table Lutherie or Hide Glue Guitars. Both tell a buyer that one person or a small team builds each guitar.

Does the list cover basses, amps and pedals?

Yes. Alongside the guitar makers you will find sister brands such as Undertow Bass, Glowplate Amplification and Germanium Garden Pedals, plus archtop, resonator and ukulele makers. Model-line names like The Woodshed and Harbormaster Deluxe are there for the instruments themselves.

Can I use one of these names for a real guitar company?

Treat every name as a starting point. The list was screened for duplicates and offensive terms, and it was not compared with existing businesses. Search for makers with the same name in your country, and take legal advice if the brand matters to you, before you commit.
