Generate Tsurani names in the style of the Riftwar and Empire novels: single names like Hokaru and Teshani, names with a house like Jindaro of the Bandekai, ruling titles like Lady Kelisha of the Tenawai, plus houses, clans, Force Commanders and Great Ones.

About Tsurani names

The Tsurani are the people of the Empire of Tsuranuanni on the world of Kelewan in Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar novels, and the heart of the Empire trilogy he wrote with Janny Wurts. A Tsurani has one given name and belongs to a house, so the full form is the name, then "of the", then the house: Mara of the Acoma. Houses gather into clans, and a rank or post is spoken in front of the name: Lord, Lady, Force Commander, First Adviser.

This list of 1,000 names follows those forms. It holds single names for men and women (Hokaru, Teshani), names with a house (Jindaro of the Bandekai, Isheya of the Ochaka), ruling lords and ladies, houses and clans on their own (House Tenawai, Clan Shandomi), soldiers from Patrol Leader up to Force Commander, household officers such as the hadonra, who runs an estate, and magicians. A magician, a Great One of the Assembly, stands apart from the houses, so those entries carry no house name.

The 34 entries marked (canon) come from the novels. Every other name is newly made in the sound of the setting, with invented houses and clans, and nothing here is official.

How to choose Tsurani names

  • Pick the house before the person. A Tsurani is known by the house as much as by the given name, so choose one house, such as the Tenawai, and name the whole household under it.
  • Use the full form for introductions and the short form in talk: Hokaru of the Tenawai in the council hall, plain Hokaru among friends.
  • Give rank to the few who hold it. One Force Commander and a handful of Strike Leaders are enough for a house's army. Force Commander Okelizo and Strike Leader Risolgo are in the list.
  • Leave the house off a magician. Great One Tapendi or Shelomak of the Assembly says everything a Tsurani needs to hear.
  • Say the name aloud before you keep it. Short ones such as Pekaio and Oyani are easy to call across a table, and a long one will be shortened by the other players anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Are these names from the Riftwar books?

Only the 34 entries marked (canon), such as Mara of the Acoma (canon) and Hokanu of the Shinzawai (canon). The rest are newly made in the style of the novels, with invented houses and clans. This page is not official or endorsed by the authors or their publishers.

How are Tsurani characters named?

A Tsurani goes by a given name followed by the house, as in Mara of the Acoma. A ruling lord or lady puts the title in front, and soldiers and household officers are often called by their post. Lord Tekanu of the Tenawai and Hadonra Benjico in this list follow that pattern.

What is the difference between a house and a clan?

A house is one family with its ruling lord or lady, its estates and its soldiers. A clan is a wider grouping of houses, and in the novels the Acoma belong to Clan Hadama. The list has both kinds of name, for example House Kelomani and Clan Jonakai.

Why do the magicians have no house name?

In the novels a magician of the Assembly is addressed as Great One, wears a black robe and gives up the ties to the house of birth. That is why entries such as Great One Shimendo and Shelomak of the Assembly give the name alone.
