Generate character names for Legend of the Five Rings: Rokugani family names first, then a Japanese personal name, as in Doji Haruka, Bayushi Akinori, Hida Goro and Utaku Tomoe, plus ronin such as Genzo the Wave Man and monks such as Brother Ekai.

About L5R names

Legend of the Five Rings is set in Rokugan, an empire inspired largely by feudal Japan, and its samurai are named the Japanese way: family name first, personal name second. The family name tells the table most of what it needs to know. A Doji or a Kakita is a Crane, a Bayushi or a Shosuro is a Scorpion, a Hida, Hiruma or Kuni is a Crab, an Akodo, Matsu or Ikoma is a Lion, an Isawa or Shiba is a Phoenix, a Togashi or Mirumoto is a Dragon, and a Shinjo, Moto or Utaku is a Unicorn.

This list pairs those family names, which belong to the setting, with real Japanese given names. Pairings such as Hida Goro and Kakita Tsubaki were made for this list and are not meant as figures from the game's story. Because the full list runs A to Z, family-first order groups it by itself: scroll to the family on your character sheet and choose from there. The smaller families of each clan, the Imperial families and several Minor Clan families are here too.

Not every character has a family. Ronin carry a personal name and whatever byname the road gives them, and monks answer to a single name, so the list also holds names such as Kihei of No Banner and Brother Ekai.

How to choose L5R names

  • Pick the family before the personal name. In Rokugan the family decides the school, the clan and the reputation that walks into the room ahead of your character.
  • A samurai takes an adult name at the gempuku, the coming-of-age ceremony, so the personal name can say something about what the character or the family hoped for.
  • A character who married into another family carries that family's name. A duelist raised among the Matsu can sit at the table as a Kakita, which is a ready-made story hook.
  • Ronin drop the family name. Use a personal name with a byname, such as Genzo the Wave Man or Yahei Without a Lord, and let the missing family name be the question other characters ask.
  • These pairings were written new for this list, but the setting has thousands of named characters across its cards and books. If a name matters to your campaign, search it before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How do names work in Legend of the Five Rings?

Samurai use the family name first and the personal name second, so Doji Haruka is Haruka of the Doji family. The family name shows the clan, and strangers address a samurai by it. Peasants, ronin and monks usually go by one name alone.

Are these names of characters from the game?

Not by design. The family names are the setting's own and belong to its publisher, and the personal names are ordinary Japanese given names. Pairings such as Bayushi Akinori, Akodo Kimiko and Shinjo Kotaro were put together for players' own characters, though with thousands of named characters in the setting a pairing can match a minor one by chance. This fan-made list has no tie to the publisher.

Which family names go with which clan?

Doji, Kakita, Daidoji and Asahina are Crane; Bayushi, Shosuro, Soshi and Yogo are Scorpion; Hida, Hiruma, Kaiu and Kuni are Crab; and Akodo, Matsu, Ikoma and Kitsu are Lion. Isawa, Shiba and Asako are Phoenix; Togashi, Mirumoto and Kitsuki are Dragon; and Shinjo, Moto, Utaku, Ide and Iuchi are Unicorn. Yoritomo, Tsuruchi and Moshi are Mantis families in the older editions, and Seppun, Otomo and Miya are the Imperial families. A few families changed clans over the editions, so check the book you play from.

What do I call a ronin or a monk?

A ronin has no family name, so a personal name and a byname do the work: Kihei of No Banner, Matabei the Sword for Hire, Okiku the Wave Woman. Monks use a single name with a title, as in Brother Ekai or Abbot Gikai.
