Trucker names are really CB radio handles, the nicknames drivers use on channel 19 so they never have to give a real name over the air. The tradition exploded in the mid-1970s when the 55 mph speed limit sent drivers to CB radios to warn each other about police, and films like Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit turned handles like Rubber Duck, Pig Pen, Bandit and Snowman into folk heroes. A good handle is short, easy to hear through static, and says something about the driver: their rig, their route, their home state or their personality.

The classic patterns are simple. An alliterative descriptor plus a first name (Diesel Dan, Highway Hank, Flatbed Fred) is the oldest style. Single punchy words borrowed from animals, weather and machinery (Coyote, Nightcrawler, Overdrive, Sidewinder) sound tougher. Home-town and regional handles (Bayou Billy, Georgia Peach, Motor City Mike) tell other drivers where you are from. Women drivers have their own tradition of sweet-but-steely handles such as Mama Bear, Steel Magnolia, Miss Kitty and Sugar Britches. Trade jargon supplies the rest: reefer, bobtail, deadhead, chicken coop (weigh station), bear (police) and Kojak with a Kodak (radar trap).

Pick a handle you can say fast into a mic, and remember that another driver will probably shorten it, so Rollin' Thunder becomes Thunder within a week.
