Generate CB radio handles in every classic style: radio-jargon names like Skip Shooter and Dead Key Dave, alliterative handles like Turn Signal Tina, and punchy one-worders like Copperhead. Built for truckers, off-roaders, RVers and anyone who keys up on channel 19.

About cb radio names

A CB handle is the on-air nickname you use instead of your real name on citizens band radio. The FCC dropped the licence requirement in 1983, but the handle tradition dates to the 1970s boom, when the 55 mph limit pushed truckers onto channel 19 and Convoy, Smokey and the Bandit and C.W. McCall made Rubber Duck and Pig Pen household names. Today CB is still used by truckers, Jeep and 4x4 clubs on trail channels, RV caravans, farmers and storm spotters, and every one of them needs a handle.

Good handles follow a few conventions. They are short, usually one to four syllables, because they have to be understood through static, engine noise and cheap speakers. They are often built from radio slang (Skip Shooter, Dead Key, Sideband Sid), from the driver's rig or job (Coal Roller, Forklift Fran, Bulldozer Bill), from where they live (Bayou Belle, Tumbleweed Tex, Great Lakes Greg) or from an animal or weather word that sounds tough or funny (Copperhead, Thunderhead, Whistle Pig). The alliterative descriptor-plus-first-name pattern is the most recognisable 70s style.

This generator mixes all of those styles, plus off-road, RV and ham-adjacent flavours. Say the candidates out loud in a fake radio voice; the one that survives being shortened by other drivers is your handle.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Say it into a cupped hand before you commit. Hard consonants (Skip, Squelch, Crowbar) carry through static far better than soft, vowel-heavy names.
  • Check it is not already in use on your local channel or in your club; two Sidewinders on channel 19 is a mess. Regional handles like Great Lakes Greg are less likely to clash.
  • Avoid anything that sounds like a radio procedure word. Handles such as Breaker, Copy or Ten-Four confuse other operators mid-transmission.
  • Tie it to something true about you, such as your rig, your route, your trade or your hometown. Other drivers remember Forklift Fran faster than a random cool word.
  • For a character in fiction or a game, pick the handle that implies a backstory; Dead Key Dave (the guy who keys the mic without talking) tells readers who he is in three words.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CB radio handle?

A handle is the nickname a CB operator uses on air instead of a real name or callsign. Because CB has been licence-free in the US since 1983, there are no assigned callsigns, so handles are the only identity most operators use.

Are CB handles only for truckers?

No. Truckers made them famous, but off-road and overland clubs use CB on trail runs, RV caravans use it to keep a convoy together, farm crews use it in the field and many hobbyists run base stations at home. The handles here cover all of those.

What makes a good CB name?

Short, distinctive and easy to hear: one to four syllables with hard consonants, something personal behind it, and nothing that sounds like a procedure word. Skip Shooter, Turn Signal Tina and Copperhead all pass; a long phrase that other drivers have to repeat does not.

Can I use the same handle on GMRS or ham radio?

On GMRS and amateur radio you must identify with your assigned callsign, but many operators use a handle alongside it for casual talk. Just keep it clean; those services have stricter rules than CB about on-air language.
