Generate triad names for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and overseas Chinatown crime stories: Cantonese society names like Wo Shing Tak and Sun Luen Yee, classical Hung Mun lodge titles, numbered factions in the 14K style, street crews, front businesses and the nicknames members go by.

About triad names

Real triad names follow conventions that are easy to imitate once you see them. Hong Kong societies usually carry a three-syllable Cantonese name built from auspicious characters: Wo (harmony), Shing (victory), Yee (righteousness), On (peace), Luen (united), Tung (together), Fuk (fortune), Tak (virtue). Wo Shing Wo, Sun Yee On and Wo On Lok all work this way, and the first syllable often marks the parent group, which is why so many Wo and Luen societies exist. Others use a number only insiders understand, the way 14K took its name from 14 Po Wah Road, with sub-branches adding a single character (14K Tak, 14K Ngai).

The older, more ceremonial layer comes from the Hung Mun, or Heaven and Earth Society, the 17th-century brotherhood that gave the triads their lodges, oaths and ranks. Names from that tradition translate grandly into English: Hall of Loyalty and Righteousness, Red Flower Pavilion, City of Willows, Society of the Five Ancestors. Rank titles such as Dragon Head, Red Pole, White Paper Fan and Straw Sandal, and the code numbers 489, 426, 415 and 432, make good names for factions and crews.

This generator also includes overseas tongs and benevolent associations, street-level crews named after Kowloon districts, front businesses, and the blunt nicknames (Four-Eyed Fai, Iron Hand Lau, Uncle Nine) that members actually use.

How to choose triad names

  • Build a Cantonese society name from three auspicious syllables and keep it pronounceable: Wo, Sun, Luen or Tung first, then Yee, Shing, Hing, Tak, On or Lok. Wo Shing Tak reads as real; random syllables do not.
  • Give a big society a branch structure: parent name plus one character (14K Tak, Wo Shing Yee) so rival factions feel related but distinct.
  • Use the grand English translations (Hall of Ten Thousand Harmonies, Red Flower Lodge) for historical or ceremonial scenes, and the short street names (Temple Street Boys, Mong Kok Tigers) for modern crews.
  • Front organisations are part of the picture: a benevolent association, athletic club, seafood holdings company or mahjong parlour makes a more believable cover than an openly criminal name.
  • For members, pair a descriptive nickname with a one-syllable surname (Fat Boy Kwan, Razor Cheung) or use the Cantonese forms Ah, Dai Lo and Uncle; full formal names are rarely used inside a society.

Frequently asked questions

What are real triad names?

The best known are 14K, Sun Yee On, Wo Shing Wo, Wo On Lok (Shui Fong), Wo Hop To, Luen Kung Lok and the Big Circle Boys in Hong Kong and Macau, United Bamboo, Four Seas and the Heavenly Way Alliance in Taiwan, and tongs like Hip Sing and On Leong in American Chinatowns. Historically they all trace back to the Hung Mun or Heaven and Earth Society.

Why are triads called triads?

The name was coined by British officials in Hong Kong from the Heaven and Earth Society's triangle symbol for heaven, earth and man. The societies themselves use the term Hung Mun (Hung Gate) or simply 'the society'; the Cantonese slang for a member is hak se wui, 'black society'.

What do triad rank names like Red Pole and 426 mean?

Each office has a title and a code number: Dragon Head (489) is the leader, Red Pole (426) the enforcer, White Paper Fan (415) the adviser or accountant, Straw Sandal (432) the liaison, and ordinary members are 49s. The numbers derive from numerology around the Hung Mun founding legend and make excellent names for fictional crews.

Can I use these names in a novel or game?

Yes. The invented society, crew, front-business and nickname entries are original and safe to use as-is. The handful of real organisations are included as reference points; for fiction you will usually want an invented name built in the same style, such as Wo Luen Shing or the Society of the Hidden Moon.
