Generate crime syndicate names modeled on real criminal traditions: Italian and Russian mafia families, Latin American cartels, triads and yakuza-style groups, street syndicates, and the secretive shadow organizations of thrillers and comics.

About crime syndicate names

Real crime syndicates rarely give themselves dramatic names. The Sicilian Mafia calls itself Cosa Nostra, "our thing." American families are known by the surname of a boss (Gambino, Bonanno) or a plain label like the Outfit, the Commission, or the Combination. Russian groups are Bratva, "brotherhood." Cartels are named for their region (Sinaloa, Cali, Medellin). Triads use poetic society names such as Heaven and Earth Society, and yakuza groups take a founder's name plus gumi or kai. The dramatic names, the Black Hand, the Camorra, Cosa Nostra, were often labels given by police and newspapers.

For fiction you can lean either way. Grounded crime novels and shows work best with surname families, place-based cartels, and euphemisms like the Firm, the Concern, or the Table, which suggest an organization that pretends to be legitimate business. Thrillers, comics, and games can go bigger with symbolic names built around a creature, a gem, a color, or a mythological gatekeeper (Hydra, Charon, Argus), or with financial slang turned into a title (the Vig, the Skim, the Clearing House).

The list above groups both styles so you can build a whole underworld: a few plain-named families, a cartel or two, an overseas triad or bratva, and one shadow organization sitting above them all.

Tips for choosing a name

  • For realism, name a family after its boss and a cartel after its region; save the symbolic names for the shadowy organization at the top of your plot.
  • Euphemisms like the Firm, the Concern, or the Table suggest a syndicate that launders itself through legitimate business.
  • Use one linguistic tradition per group (Italian, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese) and keep spellings consistent throughout your story.
  • Give rival syndicates names from different families of words so readers never mix them up on the page.
  • Avoid using real active organizations' names; the Reborn and Successors entries here are meant to be renamed to fit your world.

Frequently asked questions

How are real crime syndicates named?

Usually by outsiders. Families take the boss's surname, cartels take a region, Russian groups are simply Bratva, and Japanese groups use a founder name plus gumi or kai. Names like Cosa Nostra or the Outfit are deliberately plain.

What is the difference between a syndicate, a cartel, and a mafia?

Mafia usually means a traditional, hierarchical family-based group with initiation rituals. Cartel originally meant an alliance of trafficking groups controlling supply. Syndicate is the broadest term for any organized criminal enterprise, and it is the safest catch-all in fiction.

Can I use these names in a novel, screenplay, or game?

Yes. The invented names are free to use. Some entries reference historical organizations for flavor; if you use those, rename them or treat them as fictional successors so you are not depicting a real active group.

What makes a crime syndicate name feel menacing?

Understatement. The Commission, the Concern, or the Table are scarier than the Bloody Skull Cartel because they imply an organization confident enough not to advertise. Save the dramatic names for the top-tier shadow group.
