Names from the three historic communities of Transylvania: Romanian names such as Gavril Ardelean and Floare Pop, Hungarian and Székely names written family name first, such as Szőcs Emese and Kemény Borbála, and Saxon German names such as Misch Schuller and Agnetha Roth. Older forms such as Litovoi and Tobias Sigerus are there for historical fiction.

About Transylvanian names

Three communities have shared Transylvania for centuries, and each names its children in its own way. Many Romanian family names point to a place: Ardelean means a person from Ardeal, a Romanian name for Transylvania, while Mureșan and Someșan come from the rivers Mureș and Someș and Moldovan from Moldavia. In the 19th century Roman names such as Traian, Aurel, Liviu and Veturia became a fashion among Transylvanian Romanians, who took pride in the Latin roots of their language.

Hungarians and Székelys write the family name first, so Szőcs Emese belongs to the Szőcs family. Many Székely family names are plain given names, such as Bálint, László, Péter and Sándor. In the 16th and 17th centuries, when Transylvania was its own principality, houses such as Bethlen, Báthory, Kemény, Apafi and Teleki supplied its princes and chancellors. The list pairs such houses with given names of that time: Boldizsár, Menyhért, Druzsianna, Borbála.

The Transylvanian Saxons descend from German settlers whom the kings of Hungary invited from the 12th century on. They built towns such as Sibiu (Hermannstadt) and Brașov (Kronstadt). Schuller, Teutsch, Roth and Binder are typical family names. Their scholars often signed in Latin, which gives Honterus, Fabritius and Schesaeus. This is not a vampire list: these are names of farmers, pastors, guild masters and princes.

How to choose Transylvanian names

  • Choose the community before the name. A Székely villager can be Kolumbán Botond or Birtalan Réka, a Romanian shepherd Toader Mureșan, a Saxon farmer Misch Schuller. Most families kept to one naming tradition.
  • Keep the Hungarian order if your story is told from inside the community: Kemény Borbála, family name first. In an English sentence you can turn it around to Borbála Kemény, as long as you do it for every Hungarian character.
  • For the 1500s and 1600s use the noble houses with given names of the period, such as Apafi Druzsianna or Bethlen Orsolya. Present-day favorites such as Hunor and Kincső belong in a modern story.
  • A Saxon pastor or schoolmaster of the Reformation era can carry a Latinized name such as Tobias Sigerus or Lucas Soterius. In the village the same family would answer to a plain German form.
  • Towns have three names too. Cluj is Kolozsvár in Hungarian and Klausenburg in German, and Sibiu is Nagyszeben and Hermannstadt. Let each character use the name from his or her own language.

Frequently asked questions

Are these vampire names?

No. Dracula is a character from Bram Stoker's novel of 1897, and the historical Vlad the Impaler ruled Wallachia, south of the Carpathians, not Transylvania. This list has the kind of names people of the region really carry, such as Gavril Ardelean, Szőcs Emese and Agnetha Roth. For a gothic character, try the vampire name generators linked on this page.

Why does the family name come first in some of the names?

Hungarian puts the family name before the given name, and the Hungarians and Székelys of Transylvania do the same. Birtalan Réka is a woman called Réka from the Birtalan family, and Kolumbán Botond is a man called Botond. The Romanian and Saxon names on the list are in the usual Western order, as in Rafila Crișan and Katharina Teutsch.

What are typical Transylvanian last names?

Among Romanians: Ardelean, Mureșan, Pop, Moldovan, Crișan and Oltean. Among Hungarians and Székelys: Szőcs, Fazakas, Kolumbán, Birtalan and Hadnagy. Among the Saxons: Schuller, Teutsch, Roth, Binder and Schuster. Each is on the list as a stand-alone family name, and most also turn up inside full names such as Hadnagy Csaba.

Which names suit a medieval setting?

The oldest layer on the list is a set of single names from chronicles and charters. Gelu, Glad and Menumorut are the dukes of the medieval chronicle Gesta Hungarorum, Litovoi is a voivode named in a royal charter of 1247, and Dragoș and Bogdan were voivodes from Maramureș who crossed the mountains and founded Moldavia. People of that time went by one name, often with a place added.
