Sylvan means "of the woods," and in most fantasy settings it is also the language of the fey: the tongue dryads, satyrs, pixies and wood elves share. Sylvan names therefore sit between two traditions. One is the flowing, vowel-heavy elvish sound (Aelwyn, Ilythiel, Thalindra) that borrows from Welsh, Irish and Tolkien's Sindarin, with soft consonants like l, r, th and w and endings in -wyn, -iel, -eth and -ael. The other is plainly botanical: fey and forest spirits are often simply called Foxglove, Woodruff or Celandine, after the plants and hedgerow berries of the British countryside.

What makes a sylvan name ring true is a second element drawn from the forest itself. Bynames like Mossveil, Briarsong, Hollowoak and Dewthorn pair a woodland noun (moss, fern, root, bark, brook, bough) with a quiet verb or texture word (whisper, veil, hush, mantle). Older or greater beings usually carry a title instead of a surname: Old Mother Hawthorn, Warden of the Owl Roost, the Brook Speaker. Avoid hard stops, metal and stone imagery, which read as dwarven or orcish, and keep the whole name easy to murmur.
