About Swedish last names
Most Swedish surnames belong to a handful of clear types. The best known are the -sson patronymics. Andersson, Johansson, Karlsson, Nilsson and Eriksson are usually listed first, and each once meant the son of Anders, Johan or Karl. They froze into family names in the nineteenth century, and a regulation of 1901 made a hereditary surname the rule. The second big type is the two-part nature name, such as Lindberg (linden and mountain), Bergström (mountain and stream) and Sjögren (lake and branch), which families chose for themselves.
Three smaller groups give this list its depth. Soldiers in the old allotment army were given short, punchy names so that a company's many Anderssons could be told apart: Rask (quick), Modig (brave), Sköld (shield), Dolk (dagger). Clergy and scholars made Latin and Greek forms such as Celsius, Forselius and Nycander, and the endings -ell, -én and -in grew out of those. Noble houses carry heraldic names in old spelling, like Oxenstierna, Leijonhufvud and Gyllenhaal.
You will also find the Walloon ironworking families of the seventeenth century (Hübinette, Anjou, Pousette), Finland-Swedish names such as Runeberg, Stenroos and Smeds, and three -dotter names, which a small number of Swedes carry as legal surnames today. The list gives no ranks: read it as a wide sample, not a statistic.
How to choose Swedish last names
- Keep å, ä and ö. They are separate letters at the end of the Swedish alphabet, so Sjögren, Åkerström and Häggström are not the same names without their marks.
- Match the type of name to the family's past. A farming family suits Andersson or Nilsson, townspeople suit Lindberg or Holmqvist, a soldier's line suits Rask or Hurtig, a vicar or professor suits Forselius or Montelius, and an old noble house suits Bonde, Brahe or Gyllenhaal.
- Let the spelling show age. Qv, fv, w and th are older spellings that families kept, as in Holmqvist, Dufva, Wallin and Thelin, so pick one spelling for a family and stay with it.
- For a story set before about 1900, remember that a country family could still use true patronymics. The son of Anders was Andersson, his daughter Andersdotter, and the name changed with each generation.
- For emigrant families, expect a simpler spelling abroad. Andersson and Johansson usually became Anderson and Johnson in American records, and the dots and rings were dropped.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common Swedish last names?
Andersson, Johansson, Karlsson, Nilsson, Eriksson, Larsson, Olsson, Persson, Svensson and Gustafsson are the names usually listed at the top, and all of them are patronymics. Among names of other kinds, Lindberg, Lindström and Lindgren are some of the most widespread. All of these are in the list, which gives no exact ranks because the order shifts over time.
Why do so many Swedish surnames end in -sson?
For centuries most Swedes had no family name, only a patronymic: the father's first name plus son or dotter. When fixed surnames became the norm, many families simply kept the patronymic they had at that moment, so Andersson and Johansson stopped changing. The double s is the possessive s of the father's name followed by son.
What are Swedish soldier names?
They are short names given to men in the allotment army, where too many recruits shared the same patronymic. Most are a quality, a weapon or a piece of nature, such as Rask, Modig, Tapper, Sköld, Dolk, Hurtig and Frimodig. Many families kept the name after the soldier left service, which is why they are ordinary surnames today.
Are these surnames real?
The list is meant to hold only surnames that Swedish families carry or have carried, from Andersson to rarities like Svinhufvud and Natt och Dag. It was screened for duplicates, so search a name yourself before you rely on it. Noble names appear as surnames only and say nothing about any living family.
