About Norwegian last names

Most Norwegian surnames come from one of two places: a father's first name or a farm. For centuries a rural Norwegian carried a patronymic that changed with every generation, so the son of Hans was Hansen and his own son might be Olsen, and beside it the name of the farm where the family lived. A law of 1923 required every family to settle on one fixed, inherited surname. Some froze the patronymic, which is why Hansen, Johansen, Olsen and Larsen are so widespread today. Many others kept the farm name instead.

Farm names describe the land. Haugen is the hill, Bakken the slope, Dalen the valley, Vik a bay, Næss a headland, and Lie and Lien a hillside. Myklebust means the big farm, Ødegård a farm that once lay deserted, Sæther a summer pasture, and Aamodt the place where two rivers meet. Endings such as -stad, -heim, -land and -rud mark old farms and clearings.

Spelling varies on purpose. The same name can appear as Haaland or Håland, Ødegaard or Ødegård, Aamodt or Åmot, because many families kept the older spelling with aa after the letter å came into use. The list also holds town families of foreign origin such as Collett and Grieg, and Sami family names from the north such as Hætta and Gaup.

How to choose Norwegian last names

  • Match the name to the region. Names in -land such as Haaland and Bjelland are typical of the southwest, while -rud names such as Stensrud and Kolsrud belong to the east of the country.
  • Keep æ, ø and å where you can. If your text or game cannot show them, the usual stand-ins are ae, o or oe, and aa, so Sæther becomes Saether and Ødegård becomes Odegaard.
  • For a story set before the 1900s, give a rural character a patronymic plus a farm name, and let the farm name change if the family moves. A daughter used -datter, not -sen.
  • Pick -sen for Norway, not -sson. Hansen and Olsen read as Norwegian or Danish, while Hansson and Olsson read as Swedish.
  • Say the surname aloud with the first name. Short farm names such as Berg, Lie and Vik balance a long first name, and long ones such as Myklebust or Kristoffersen suit a short one.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Norwegian last names?

The -sen patronymics lead, with Hansen, Johansen, Olsen, Larsen, Andersen, Pedersen and Nilsen among the most widespread. Among farm names, Haugen, Hagen, Berg, Bakken, Dahl and Moen are found all over the country. We give no rankings or figures here, because they shift from year to year.

Why do so many Norwegian surnames end in -sen?

The ending means son. Until fixed surnames became compulsory in 1923, most people used a true patronymic that changed each generation, and many families then kept whichever one they had at the time. Denmark uses the same -sen ending, while Sweden uses -sson.

What do Norwegian farm names mean?

Most describe the landscape or the farm itself. In this list Haugen is the hill, Bakken the slope, Solberg the sunny mountain, Myklebust the big farm and Sæther the summer pasture. The final -en, -et or -a is the definite article, so Haugen is literally "the hill".

Does a Norwegian surname show where a family came from?

A farm name can point to a district, because some name types cluster in certain regions, but the common ones exist in many places at once. There are many unrelated farms called Haugen or Bakken, so sharing a surname does not mean sharing ancestors. Treat a surname as a clue, never as proof of ancestry.
