Swamp Town Name Generator

Towns built in swamps get named by the people who had to survive there, so the names are practical, slightly grim and very specific. In the Louisiana bayous a settlement is usually a landing, a crossing or a point named after the family that ran the ferry or the thing that nearly killed someone: Thibodeaux's Landing, Cottonmouth Landing, Fever Creek. In the English Fens the same instinct produced one-word villages built from Old English and Norse wetland words: mere (lake), fen, carr (wet woodland), lode (drainage channel), holm (river island) and moss (bog). A name like Mereholt or Lodeham reads as ancient because those are the real building blocks.

Fantasy swamp towns work best when they borrow one of those two registers instead of stacking spooky adjectives. A stilt village in a D&D campaign feels real as Stiltwatch Keep, Sallowstead or Murkwade; it feels generic as Dark Shadow Swamp Village. The other trick is to name the place after its function or its folklore: Leechmarket, Witchlight Ferry, Drowned Bell, Hell's Half Acre.
