Generate story arc names for the big movements of a novel, comic run, anime season, TV series or tabletop campaign: sieges and betrayals, tournament and training arcs, mysteries, romances and slow-burn tragedies. Use them as chapter blocks, season titles or the headers in your outline.

About story arc names

A story arc name is a promise about the shape of the next stretch of the story. The good ones do one of three things: name the event everyone is heading toward (Siege of Holloway, The Trial of Ser Anselm), name the place the arc lives in (Into the Ashlands, Outpost Nine), or name the emotional turn it delivers (What the Tide Took, Hollow Victory). Long-running manga tend to use the first two, which is why arcs get remembered as the place or the fight; comic runs and prestige TV lean on the third, with short, loaded titles like Knightfall or Aftershock.

This generator mixes all of those registers. You will find epic fantasy arcs built from sieges, crowns and drowned cities, sci-fi arcs that sound like operations and incidents, school-life and tournament arcs straight out of shonen structure, plus mystery, romance, horror and literary arcs for grounded stories. Many are deliberately short, because arc names get repeated in recaps, wikis and episode cards and need to survive being said out loud.

Read the list as a palette rather than a menu: swap in your own place names and characters, and pair a one-word arc with a longer one to give a season its rhythm.

How to choose story arc names

  • Name the arc after its turning point, not its premise: readers remember the siege, the trial or the betrayal, not the travel that led there.
  • Vary lengths across a series. A one-word arc like Eclipse hits harder when it follows something longer like The Saltmarsh Conspiracy.
  • Keep the arc's name spoiler-safe. Naming the arc The Death of the Queen tells readers the ending before chapter one; The Widow's Gambit hints at the same thing without giving it away.
  • If you write manga-style, you can append Arc to almost anything here (Grand Tournament Arc, Dark Continent Arc), but drop it in chapter headers and back-cover copy where it reads as filler.
  • Swap in your own proper nouns. Siege of Holloway becomes Siege of Wherever-your-city-is, and the structure still works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a story arc name and a chapter title?

An arc spans many chapters or episodes and is named for its overall movement: a war, a tournament, a mystery, a relationship. A chapter title covers a single scene or beat. Arc names therefore tend to be broader and more event-driven, while chapter titles can be small, specific or ironic. If you need titles for individual chapters, the chapter name generator linked below is a better fit.

Should I add the word Arc to the name?

Only in contexts where readers expect it, such as anime and manga fandom wikis or shonen-style outlines. In a novel, a comic trade paperback or a TV season, the bare title (Knightfall, The Long Winter) is standard. Most names here work either way, so pick the form that matches how your audience already talks about stories.

Can I use these for a D&D or tabletop campaign?

Yes. Campaign arcs behave like story arcs, and names such as Raid on the Hidden Village, Tower of Trials or The Merchant Wars map neatly onto a few sessions of play. Use them as headers in your campaign notes and reveal them to players as each arc begins for a satisfying episodic feel.

How do I pick an arc name that fits my genre?

Match the register of your genre. Fantasy and historical stories suit crowns, sieges, oaths and place names; sci-fi and thrillers suit protocols, incidents, operations and call signs; slice-of-life and romance suit seasons, festivals and small domestic events; horror suits short, physical phrases like Cold Hands or Under the Floorboards. The list covers all of those moods, so look for the names that sound like your story.
