About star wars alien names
Star Wars alien names follow the species, not the galaxy. Rodians get short, clipped names with hard stops (Greedo, Wald, Bolla Ropal). Twi'leks are soft and vowel-heavy, often with a family name (Hera Syndulla, Aayla Secura, Bib Fortuna). Zabraks and Dathomirians sound harsh and single-worded (Maul, Savage, Sugi, Eeth Koth). Wookiees growl through long names full of doubled R's and the -bacca or -warro endings (Chewbacca, Tarfful, Lowbacca). Hutts take a clan name after the personal one (Jabba Desilijic Tiure, Durga Besadii Tai). Trandoshans hiss (Bossk, Cradossk, Sskeer), Gungans bounce (Jar Jar Binks, Boss Nass, Roos Tarpals), Chiss carry three-part core names (Mitth'raw'nuruodo), and cantina regulars from the films have names that sound like they were overheard once and written down phonetically (Ponda Baba, Muftak, Figrin D'an).
The first part of this list is canon and Legends aliens, grouped loosely by species: Wookiees, Rodians, Twi'leks, Zabraks, Togruta, the Jedi Council species, Neimoidians, Kaminoans, Mon Calamari, Hutts, Gungans, Ewoks, Jawas, podracers, the Mos Eisley cantina and Jabba's palace, the sequel era, Rebels, Clone Wars villains, the Expanded Universe and the High Republic. The second part is original names written to the same species patterns, so a Teesk Vondo reads as a Rodian and a Gorrwarra as a Wookiee without a label. Droids and human characters are left out on purpose.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick the species first, then the name. A Twi'lek named Bossk or a Wookiee named Wald sounds wrong to anyone who knows the films; match the phonology in the list for that species.
- Copy canon's habits for surnames. Twi'leks, Rodians, Mon Calamari and Chiss usually have two-part names; Zabraks, Trandoshans, Gamorreans and Jawas usually get one word. Hutts add a clan name (Desilijic, Besadii, Anjiliac).
- Use an apostrophe or hyphen only where the species does: Chiss core names, Bith musicians (Figrin D'an), Tusken Raiders (A'Sharad Hett) and Bothans (Fey'lya). Elsewhere it reads as generic sci-fi.
- For an original character in an RPG, take two or three sounds from a canon name of the same species and rebuild them. Sugi and Eeth Koth give you Zabrak names like Surak Nell; Greedo and Wald give you Rodians like Greeba Shan.
- Search the name on Wookieepedia before publishing. Star Wars has thousands of named aliens, and an invented name that happens to belong to an obscure canon character will confuse readers.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Star Wars alien names?
About half are. The first half of the list is canon and Legends characters from the films, The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, Resistance, the High Republic, the Old Republic games and the Expanded Universe novels and comics, all of them non-human. The second half is original names written to match each species' sound pattern, and those are free to use for fan fiction, RPG characters and original stories.
How do I know which species an original name fits?
The original names are grouped by species in the same order as the canon section: Rodian, Twi'lek, Zabrak, Togruta, Nautolan, Kel Dor, Mon Calamari, Sullustan, Neimoidian, Ithorian, Duros, Trandoshan, Wookiee, Hutt, Gungan, Ewok, Jawa, Tusken, Gamorrean, Weequay, Nikto, Aqualish, Gran, Bith, Chiss, and then a long run of rarer species such as Devaronian, Pantoran, Mirialan, Kaleesh, Ugnaught, Clawdite, Zeltron, Falleen, Bothan, Gand, Cathar, Noghri and Yuuzhan Vong. Does this generator include droids or humans?
No. Droids have their own naming system (letters and numbers like R2-D2 or IG-88) and humans in Star Wars follow a separate style, so both are left out here. Use the droid name generator for astromechs and assassin droids and the Star Wars human name generator for Corellian, Alderaanian or Imperial characters.
Can I use a canon alien name for my own character?
For a one-off RPG session, sure, but for fan fiction or an original character it is better to take an original name from the second half of the list or build your own from the species pattern. Canon names belong to established characters with their own histories, and readers will expect that history to come with the name.
