Star Ship Name Generator

Starship names in space opera are fleet names, and fleets are systematic. Real navies group ships by class and give each class a naming theme, so British aircraft carriers were Illustrious, Indefatigable, Implacable and Formidable, while American carriers were battles and presidents. Star Trek borrowed the whole system: Starfleet's USS prefix, registry numbers like NCC-1701, and names drawn from historic warships (Enterprise, Yorktown, Saratoga, Hood). Copying that structure, prefix plus name plus optional registry, is the single quickest way to make a fictional navy feel real.

The prefix does a lot of work. USS and HMS place a ship in a familiar tradition; ISS reads as an empire; invented prefixes such as ESS (Earth), CSS (Colonial), FSS (Federal) or RSS (Republic) let you signal politics at a glance. Class themes do the rest: virtues for battleships (Vindicator, Fortitude), birds of prey for fast scouts (Peregrine, Shrike), Titans and Muses for science and survey ships (Hyperion, Calliope), and grand epithets for flagships (Sovereign of the Stars, Hammer of Rigel). Astronomical terms like Perihelion, Syzygy and Delta-V give a harder, more technical flavor.

This list is organized so you can lift a whole class at once, from a squadron of CSS bird-named corvettes to a line of HMS dreadnoughts, and still find single evocative names for a lone explorer or a pirate's prize.
