Southern belle names follow conventions you can hear in any Charleston, Savannah or Baton Rouge church directory. The most recognizable is the double first name: Mary Katherine, Anna Grace, Sarah Beth, Ella Mae, Lou Ellen. Both halves are used every single time, so Mary Katherine is never just Mary. The first half is usually a classic (Mary, Anna, Sarah, Ella, Emma) and the second a short family name or virtue (Grace, Claire, Kate, Beth, Belle, Mae, Lee, Jo). The list mixes double names, vintage single names like Clementine and Tallulah, French-Louisiana names, and nickname-plus-surname combos, along with a few famous fictional belles for flavor.
