Sontaran Name Generator
Clipped clone warrior names with rank and boast
Browse 1,000 Sontaran names for Doctor Who fan fiction and tabletop games: clipped bare names like Skarn and Bresk, ranks like Field Major Vrex and Group Marshal Sturn, boasts like Skelt the Relentless, fleet and clone batch names, and demoted warriors like Nurse Stolg.
About Sontaran names
Sontarans are the clone warriors of Doctor Who, first seen in The Time Warrior. Hatched in vast batches for a war with the Rutans that has run for thousands of years, they need a name only to be barked across a parade ground. The names heard on screen are short and lean on S, T, K and R: Linx, Styre, Staal, Skorr, Strax. The invented names here keep that clipped shape, and about half begin with a letter other than S, as in Bresk, Kragg and Druk.
What tells one clone from another is rank. The series uses Commander, Major, Field Major, General and Group Marshal, and the list runs the whole ladder from Cadet Stip to Group Marshal Sturn, adding postings for scouts, assessors and ship crews. Other entries carry a boast, like Skelt the Relentless, or a unit, like Sergeant Tark of the Ninth Assault Fleet or Kradd of Clone Batch Twelve.
Strax, a commander sent to serve as a nurse and later a butler, is the model for the disgraced warriors in unlikely jobs, such as Nurse Stolg. The veterans wear the war in their names, like Old Stannok of the Long War. Nine names come from the series and are listed in the questions below; the rest were made up for this page.
How to choose Sontaran names
- Pick the bare name first and say it aloud as an order. A Sontaran name should survive being shouted: Skarn, Tovv and Brax work, and anything with three soft syllables does not.
- Let rank do the characterization. A Cadet or a Trooper is eager and one of millions, a Field Major runs a mission alone, and a General or a Group Marshal commands fleets, so Cadet Stip and General Thrask read as very different people.
- Use an epithet when your Sontaran introduces himself. In the series they tend to give name, rank and unit in one breath, so Varsk the Punctual or Klarn, Hammer of the Outer Rim hands a writer or a game master a ready entrance line.
- For comedy, keep the warrior's dignity and change only the job. Tea Steward Krimp and Kraid the Reluctant Butler are funny because they treat a tea tray like a battlefield.
- Keep the names from the series (Linx, Styre, Staal, Strax and the others) for those characters and build your own warrior on one of the other entries.
Frequently asked questions
How are Sontaran names formed?
On screen a Sontaran name is a single short word, usually one syllable and usually starting with S, worn after a rank: Commander Linx, Field Major Styre, General Staal. Some add a boast, as Staal does when he calls himself the Undefeated. The invented names follow the same pattern with other sounds and other boasts, such as Commander Skarn, Field Major Vrex and Skelt the Relentless.
Which names on this list come from Doctor Who itself?
Nine of the 1,000: Commander Linx, Field Major Styre, Commander Stor, Group Marshal Stike, Major Varl, General Staal, Commander Skorr, Commander Strax and Commander Kaagh, the last of them from The Sarah Jane Adventures. The other entries were made up for this page in the same clipped style. Names this short can match a character from an episode, an audio play or a novel by chance, and no such match is intended. The page has no connection with the BBC.
Why do some Sontarans on the list work as nurses or butlers?
They follow Strax, who appears in the series as a commander made to serve as a nurse and later works as a butler in Victorian London. Entries such as Nurse Stolg, Tea Steward Krimp and Kruss, Demoted to Parade Sweeper put an invented warrior in the same kind of posting. They suit comic scenes and non-player characters.
Can I use these names in fan fiction or a tabletop game?
Yes. They are meant for player characters, enemy commanders, ranks of background troopers and fan stories. The units attached to some names, like the Ninth Assault Fleet or Clone Batch Twelve, are inventions of this page, so rename them freely to fit your own campaign.
