Who's in the Bag Name Generator
Famous names to write on slips for the bag
Deal names to write on slips for Who's in the Bag, the party game also played as the name game, the hat game, celebrity or fishbowl. Unlike most lists on this site, the entries are well-known real and fictional names rather than invented ones: Cleopatra, Sherlock Holmes, Marie Curie, Paddington Bear, Robin Hood and Wonder Woman.
About Who's in the bag names
Who's in the Bag? is the party game where every slip of paper holds a famous name and a player describes it to their team without saying it. The same game is played as the name game, the hat game, celebrity and fishbowl, and it works with any names the whole table can recognize. Unlike most lists on this site, this one holds no invented names: all 1,000 entries are well-known real and fictional names.
The real people are all figures from the past: rulers such as Cleopatra and Queen Victoria, scientists and explorers such as Marie Curie and Neil Armstrong, writers, painters, composers, performers and sports greats. Living people are left out on purpose, so a slip never turns into an argument about someone in the news. More than half of the entries are fictional: classic film and television characters, children's book and cartoon favorites, superheroes and villains, and figures from myth, legend, fairy tale and nursery rhyme.
Each entry is the name alone, spelled the way it is commonly known, so a slip is quick to write. Easy names for younger players (Winnie the Pooh, Humpty Dumpty, Bugs Bunny) sit beside harder ones (Archimedes, Scheherazade, Isambard Kingdom Brunel), so deal a batch and skip any name your group would not know.
How to choose Who's in the bag names
- Plan on four or five slips per player. Deal a batch, copy the names your table knows, and deal again until the bag is full.
- Match the names to the youngest player. For a family table lean on fairy tale, nursery rhyme and cartoon names such as Cinderella, Peppa Pig and The Gingerbread Man, and save Nicolaus Copernicus and Lady Macbeth for an adults' round.
- Write the name exactly as it is dealt and nothing else. A clue on the slip, such as "the detective", gives the describer a head start the other team did not get.
- For the fishbowl version, keep the same slips for every round: one round of free description, one of a single word and one of silent acting, in whichever order your table plays them. Names with a clear gesture, such as Tarzan, Zorro or Medusa, pay off in the acting round.
- Agree on a passing rule before you start. Many tables let the describer put one unknown name back in the bag per turn.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real names or invented ones?
They are well-known real and fictional names, because the game only works when the table has heard of the name on the slip. The list runs from Cleopatra, Albert Einstein and William Shakespeare to Sherlock Holmes, Mary Poppins and Wonder Woman. The real people are historical figures who have died, and more than half of the entries are characters from fiction, myth and legend.
Is this the same as the name game, the hat game, celebrity or fishbowl?
Yes. These are all names for the same idea: famous names on slips in a bag, a hat or a bowl, described to teammates against the clock without saying the name. Fishbowl and celebrity usually add extra rounds with the same slips, one with a single word only and one with acting and no words. This list works for any of them.
How many names do we need for one game?
Four or five slips per player is a common amount, so a table of eight needs 32 to 40 names. With 1,000 names on this page you can fill the bag for many evenings before the same name comes around again.
Is this page connected to the boxed card game?
No. This is a free list for the pen-and-paper version played at parties and family gatherings, and it is not affiliated with any published edition of the game. All you need is paper, a pen and a bag.
