Sonic character names follow a formula that Sega set in 1991 and has barely changed since: a short trait or object word, then the species. Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, Vector the Crocodile, Surge the Tenrec. The first word tells you what the character does or looks like (Knuckles punches, Rouge is red-lipped and roguish, Espio spies, Big is big), which is why the names are so easy to remember and so easy to parody.

The franchise also loves puns and hidden meanings. Miles Prower is "miles per hour." Cream, Cheese, Vanilla, and Chocola are a family of dairy desserts. Ivo Robotnik's nickname Eggman describes his silhouette. Villains and robots break the pattern with numbers and titles: E-123 Omega, E-102 Gamma, Metal Sonic, Dr. Starline, Eggman Nega, and the Deadly Six (Zavok, Zazz, Zeena, Zomom, Zor, Master Zik) whose names all start with Z. Adaptations added family names and human characters, such as Sally Acorn and Bunnie Rabbot in Archie/SatAM, Chris Thorndyke in Sonic X, and Tom Wachowski and Agent Stone in the movies.
