Seven Dwarfs Name Generator
One-word names for an eighth dwarf
Find a name for an eighth dwarf: one-word moods, habits and quirks like Jolly, Chirpy and Zippy, short titles like Prof and Sarge, -ful names like Wishful, and ready sets of seven for group costumes, class plays and party games.
About seven dwarfs names
In the best-known film version of Snow White, the seven dwarfs are Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey: six everyday adjectives and one short title. That is the whole recipe for an eighth dwarf. One plain word that states a mood, a habit or a quirk sounds at home in the cottage. Most of the adjectives end in -y, as in Jolly, Dozy, Chatty and Zippy, but Bashful shows that -ful works too (Wishful, Forgetful, Hopeful), and Doc opens the door to short titles such as Prof, Coach, Sarge and Skipper.
The 1,000 entries here follow that recipe in a dozen strands: cheerful and cross moods, sleepy and hungry habits, noises and sniffles, speeds, tidy and messy quirks, virtues, weather moods, job titles, and words from the mine and the workshop such as Gritty, Nugget and Lantern. For variety there are nickname nouns (Giggles, Whiskers, Butterfingers), compound moods (Easygoing, Wide-Eyed), two-word nicknames (Old Faithful, Little Hiccup, Eager Beaver) and around fifty ready sets of seven, each written on one line.
The single entries are real English words, set phrases or plain titles, not made-up spellings, so they read easily off a name tag. The film's own seven are left out of the list, and this page has no connection to Disney or any other studio.
How to choose seven dwarfs names
- Start from the person or pet, not the list. Ask what they do every day: the one who is always last out the door is Poky, the one who hums is Humming, the one who keeps losing a glove is Mittens.
- For a group costume, mix the kinds the way the film does: one title, one cross name, one cheerful name, one sleepy name and a few quirks. Several of the ready sets do this for you, or you can build a set around a theme such as weather or the kitchen.
- Keep it to one or two syllables for hats and name tags. Zippy, Prof and Glum can be read from the back of a hall; Flibbertigibbet is for the child who wants the longest name in the class.
- Choose a name the wearer is glad to answer to. A quirk they laugh about themselves, such as Wiggly or Chatty, works well. Skip anything that makes fun of how someone looks, speaks or learns.
- Test it in a sentence from a bedtime story: 'Hungry reached the supper table first.' If it reads like a line from the tale, the name fits.
Frequently asked questions
What would an eighth dwarf be called?
Follow the film's pattern: one everyday word for a mood, a habit or a quirk, or a short title. Jolly, Dizzy, Peppy, Dozy, Wishful, Prof and Sarge are all in this list, and each sounds like it belongs beside the original seven.
Are the original seven dwarfs in this list?
No. Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey are the seven from Disney's animated film, and they are named on this page only to show the pattern. The list holds new names in the same manner, and this site is not affiliated with Disney.
Did the dwarfs have names in the original fairy tale?
Not in the Brothers Grimm version, where the seven dwarfs are unnamed. The names most people know come from the animated film, which is why an eighth dwarf name copies its style of plain mood and habit words.
How do the sets of seven work?
Some entries are a whole group on one line, such as Sunny, Windy, Misty, Foggy, Rainy, Snowy, Stormy for a weather group, or Prof, Coach, Sarge, Chief, Cap, Cookie, Boss for a crew of titles. Copy the line and give one name to each person. For a bigger or smaller group, add or drop names from the single-word entries.
