A Scrabble name layout is the crossword-style arrangement of names you see in tile wall art, wedding signs and nursery decor: the family surname runs across the middle, each family member's first name hangs off it vertically wherever they share a letter, and anchor words like FAMILY, LOVE, HOME or EST 2019 fill the gaps. The whole thing has to obey Scrabble rules to look right, which means every name must connect to another through a shared tile, nothing floats on its own, and no two names run parallel touching side by side unless the accidental two-letter combinations are acceptable.

The practical trick is letters in common. Names rich in A, E, R, N, S, L and T interlock easily; MARTINEZ can host MARA, TESSA, IAN and NATE at once because it has an A, an E, an I and an N to hang them from. Names with no shared letters (JOY and MILLER, for example) can only meet through a bridge word, which is why anchor words are so useful. Vertical names should alternate above and below the surname to keep the layout balanced, and the longest first name usually goes near the centre.

Use this list to gather your family's names alongside bridge words, then sketch the grid on graph paper before buying tiles: count how many of each letter you need, since one standard set has only one Z, Q, X, J and K and two of most other consonants.
