Medieval Scottish Name Generator
Kings, earls, barons and burgesses, 900 to 1500
Generate medieval Scottish names from about 900 to 1500 in the forms the records and historians give them: Gaelic patronymics like Máel Coluim mac Donnchada, Scoto-Norman barons like Walter fitz Alan, Norse earls like Harald Maddadsson and burgh folk like Marion Baxter. The list mixes recorded people with period-form names built from attested given names and byname types.
About medieval Scottish names
Medieval Scotland never had a single naming tradition. Between about 900 and 1500 the kingdom held Gaelic speakers in Alba and the west, Norse settlers in Orkney, Caithness and the Isles, English speakers in Lothian and, from the twelfth century, Norman and Flemish families brought in by David I. This list of 1,000 names follows all of them and mixes two kinds of entry: recorded people, in the forms historians use, and period-form names built from an attested given name plus a kind of byname really used with it.
Gaelic names run on patronymics. Mac means son, ingen means daughter, and the father's name follows in the genitive, so Máel Coluim mac Donnchada is Máel Coluim, son of Donnchad. Devotional names open with Gille (servant) or Máel (devotee) and close with a saint or with Christ: Gille Brigte, Gille Míchéil, Máel Ísu. Norse names in the north do the same job with -son and -dottir, as in Harald Maddadsson.
Incomers used de with an estate (Robert de Brus) or fitz with a father's name (Walter fitz Alan). Earls and their kin were known by their province (Isabella of Fife), and burgh folk took Scots trade bynames such as Baxter, Litster, Souter and Lorimer. Women make up more than a third of the list.
How to choose medieval Scottish names
- Pick a century and a region first. Mac, Gille and Máel names fit Alba before 1200 and the west all through the period, de and fitz belong mostly to 1120 to 1300, and plain surnames such as Douglas or Hepburn with Scots forms like Jonet and Hob read as 1350 onward.
- Match the byname to the rank: a province for an earl's family (of Mar, of Lennox), de plus an estate for a baron, a trade for a burgess, and a patronymic for a Gaelic lord or an Orkney farmer.
- If you build your own Gaelic patronymic, remember that the father's name changes form after mac or ingen: Donnchad becomes Donnchada, Fergus becomes Fergusa, Domnall becomes Domnaill. Copy a pattern from the list rather than guessing.
- Recorded people and built names sit side by side and are not marked. If it matters whether a name belonged to a real king, bishop or countess, look it up before you give it to a character.
- Spelling follows one policy per group: medieval Gaelic spelling for Gaelic names, historians' usual forms for Norman, Scots and Norse ones. Keep to one spelling within a story, because Máel Coluim and Malcolm are the same name.
Frequently asked questions
Are these the names of real medieval Scottish people?
Some of them. Somairle mac Gille Brigte, Walter fitz Alan, Thomas Randolph and Derbforgaill of Galloway are recorded people, given in the forms historians use. Others, such as Marion Baxter or Bethóc of Lennox, are built in period form: the given name and the kind of byname are attested, but the person is not. The two kinds are not marked, so check a name before treating it as history.
What do mac and ingen mean in these names?
In medieval Gaelic, mac means son of and ingen means daughter of, and the father's name follows in the genitive case. Domnall mac Ragnaill is Domnall, son of Ragnall, and Bethóc ingen Somairle is Bethóc, daughter of Somairle. These are patronymics that describe one person, not inherited surnames. Fixed clan surnames in Mac grew out of them later.
Which women's names are on the list?
Gaelic sources give names such as Bethóc, Affraic, Derbforgaill, Forbflaith and Finnguala, usually with ingen and a father's name. Norman and Lowland families used Margaret, Isabella, Marjorie, Euphemia, Mariota, Egidia, Christian, Ada and Ermengarde, and the saga of the Orkney earls adds Norse names such as Frakokk and Ingibjorg. You will find queens, countesses, prioresses and burgh women, for example Ermengarde de Beaumont, Affraic ingen Fergusa and Christian Brewster.
Why do the spellings look different from modern Scottish names?
Gaelic names are given in medieval Gaelic spelling, which is older than the forms used today. Máel Coluim is the modern Malcolm, Donnchad is Duncan, Domnall is Donald, Áengus is Angus and Somairle is Somerled. For modern first names and clan surnames, the Scottish and Highlander generators are the better fit.
